Real international school quality, indeed:

".. i teach at a prestigous english school, a thai girl i have been courting keeps saying that she thinks i am same same bad farang" and, "I am an english teacher at a prestigous international school in thailand. i must say that i have only met a handful of leuk krungs who are very intelligent in my classes, or in the club/disco scene where I am well known.

A couple of other things, many of the leuk krung girls are relentless flirts. several of them have wiggled into my bed, and then after realizing i would not date them, they and there dumb parents tried to get me arrested and fired. but i wouldnt let'em." What English teacher writes like that, mis-spelling prestigious?

Not to mention the terrible punctuation.

Anyhow, salaries aren't everything. International schools all have different benefits on top of salaries - housing allowance, free or discounted schooling for dependents, daycare, medical, flights, etc etc. When accepting a job everything needs to be considered in relation to the applicant's personal situation. If anyone wanted to know salary and benefits information of a particular school, the interview would be the best place to find out.

Actually, there are a couple of schools where you can make great money. For Thailand, that is. The school that was basically built by the American embassy, International School of Bangkok (ISB), I think that's the one the embassy supported anyway, pays teachers 100,000 baht/month. I don't know if this is all teachers. or just some, but i have heard of teachers at this school making 120,000. This is quite an exception, however, and you must be absolutely qualified with all the right documentation. I'd always thought of this school and 2 others as the top three in this category, and I believe the other 2 schools pay quite high salaries like this as well, but i"ve been out of Bangkok too long to remember the namese of those 2 schools.

I myself earned 43,000 at an international school, which I know isn't great, but it was outside of Bangkok and way more than enough, I'll tell you. I think quite a few international schools pay upwards of 50,000-70,000 if you're qualified, but most probably pay around 40,000-50,000 for farang teachers. For me, this is more than enough because of my spending habits. For a lot of people, sounds like it is not enough. Someone told me not to settle for anything below 50,000 as that's what farangs got at their school, and they didn't consider their school to be that great or high in the salary range. And then of course there's the problem of teaching, which ain't too great a job.

So, anyway, if you want the money, go for ISB, although it'd be hard to get a place there I'm sure.

P.S. I decided to add that to get that kind of top salary I mentioned, you'd probably have to be recruited from overseas in the first place.

And you forgot to put a paragraph break between the end of the quote and your comment. People make typos all the time. Do you have a need to feel superior?

I think what PB actually left out was the "irony alert" to help our more literal-minded members understand that the misspelling of "prestigious" was the least of the problems which that message would have indicated if it had really been from an English teacher rather than a troll. Whether or not you're able to appreciate the irony now, let me just remind everyone that unless there's a VERY, VERY GOOD POINT to it (in this case, making fun of an obvious wind-up artist) spelling flames are not appreciated here.

I think confirmation of the OP's troll status is confirmed by witnessing his other troll threads being closed down.

As a side note, jimjim's guess of 40K-50K for a farang teacher at an international school is about 1/3 correct. At real international schools anyway...

speaking of which the earlier-mentioned and prestigous Dead-end English Language Institute & Laundry Service has applied to add "International" to their company title and will soon be seeking teachers in that 40K salary range.

Yes, those who want to teach should note the difference between regular international schools (grade ranges from K-12, all kinds of subjects taught in English, math, science, etc.) and language schools where people pay just to learn English, and usually nothing else. Schools of the latter nature don't usually pay well. Although, if you could get a job at Wall Street Institute, it's a pretty good salary as teacher salaries go (45,000).

If you are a qualified experienced teacher (not efl etc) at a decent international school you should be earning minimum 80K without benefits and upwards of 100k without benefits if you are recruited from overseas or a job fair. If you are a year coordinator or dept head, expect more.

Remember, for quality employers who want quality employees, they need to pay similar or more than you would earn in your home country. Otherwise ambitious career minded people wouldnt relocate. Not everyone is here because they like the lifestyle and will take a reduced salary. Many people still have real money expenses back home such as mortgages, retirement contributions, childrens education etc etc which require a real salary.

There's quite a range in the salaries being offered amongst the International schools as well as within the schools. For example, a teacher recruited from within Thailand would be on a lot less than one from abroad although the former might even be more qualified and with more experience. The locally employed label is used as a form of get out clause. Anyway, the high paying ones that I knew of during my time in Thailand were....NIST, Patana, St John's and I think Harrow too. These offered the British (except NIST I think which if I am correct offered IB) style curriculum and I am not too sure of the American ones. I knew teachers who were being paid around 120k per month during 2001. Then you had the free flight home and private health care and the generous holidays of course. The 120k included housing allowance. An EFL teacher at these schools from my experience would most certainly be locally employed but still the salary will be far better than your average language school.

The kind that work on an hourly basis for 250 baht at the prestigous Dead-end English Language Institute & Laundry Service.

:o

Hey fellow educators. I have been living and teaching in Thailand 2 and a half years. Currently I owe my happy well earning income status from a so called "dead-end language institute" working hourly rates.

One thing I can tell you and that is it is much more worth the "land of smiles" experience when you are employed at a language center. You get to meet a diverse range of people, not only Thai but from other neighboring countries like Korea, China and even Russia!

Teaching at an international school is a pain in the ass! Taking all the "wassup brotha!" And "Yo! Wanna buy a suit buddy?" from the Nepalese tailors in Pattaya is a much more delightful and accomodating experience compared to putting up with all the shit the half half spoilt rich Farang/Issarn kids.

I myself am a "Kreung-Luk" but have been gifted with 3 languages. a ###### great education all thanks to my family, who were never up to standard enough to afford anything nice.

So guys, choose between teaching at a dead-end language center or international school. It all comes down to 'income, working hours, level of instructions, day offs and amount of students.

Good luck.

MBB.

I don't know why you are picking on Farrang/Isaan kids!?!? Spoilt children can be of any background. It almost sounds like you resent other mixed people who have money?!

Also isn't the correct term 'Luk Kreung not Kreung Luk'?

The top international schools here prefer to hire overseas; thus, those living in Thailand are a last resort. But it is not as difficult to be accepted in a newly-opened international school. However, it seems that the salaries are beginning to move towards the 50,000 baht range overall.

St Johns, last I heard, no longer offers a huge salary. A few years back, all teachers making over 100,000 baht were told that salaries would be chopped by more than half. As a result, many of the teachers left. Supposedly St Johns is not making much money due to over expansion.

RIS, Ruamrudee, has also taken steps to put a cap on their salaries as well.

Many international schools that have opened recently (in the last five years or so) only offer around 50,000 baht, about the same as well established schools with English Programs or bilingual programs. NSIT is an example of this.

The teaching boom in Thailand is pretty much over. Because there are too many schools and not enough students to go around, salaries are negatively affected. I would even go so far as to comment that so many so-called "international" schools have opened up in the past five years or so that there is a glut in the market. Salaries are not high because fees are kept low to attract parents. And one only needs to read teflwatch.org to hear about the hassles one can face working in such an environment where school owners treat their staff badly due to the fact that the school is not making any money.

I thought that this might happen. I was on 65k and locally employed. Maybe schools such as NIST continue to pay a good salary because I believe it has links with the UN? There is another school up country which is a member of some international organization.....I can't remember where. There's one branch in Cardiff...That's Atlantic college. I think there's another in Singapore. The offer the International Bacc. Do a search on Atlantic College Cardiff and see which org it is and where there are other branches. It will surely be a reputable school and not a business but some kind of charitable organization.

I agree with a poster above that Language school work offers you the opportunity to meet more interesting and a wider variety of people.....both students and teachers.

Even for Patana that seems too much. What was his experience and qualifications prior to working there?

I have been offered a job at 90K baht/month working 100 hours/month with a class of 25 or less. Do you think this is good? The women interviewing me kept hinting that the majority of her teachers are not physically attractive or well dressed or good looking, so that might have been the kicker.

Oh, Sean, you well dressed lady-killer, you handsome stud you, don't hire yourself out for only 90,000 per month! With your good looks and impeccable resume and high educational accomplishment, you should hold out for 125K, 80 hours per month, class size of 20 or less.

Having reviewed all your prior posts and various autobiographical material, I'm sure that all those women who were interviewing you talked about little else than, "Oh, our teachers very ugly, they not good boom-boom!!" Professional Thai ajarns talk like that in interviews, all the time. :o
