WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trump on Thursday stopped House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi from using a military plane for an overseas trip, in a tit for tat after the Democratic leader's suggestion he postpone the State of the Union address during the partial government shutdown.

Republican Trump told Pelosi in a letter that her trip to Belgium, Egypt and Afghanistan, which he derided as a "public relations event," would be postponed, citing the shutdown that has entered its 27th day.

Pelosi had planned to visit U.S. troops in Afghanistan, with a stop in Brussels for meetings to reaffirm the United States' "ironclad commitment" to NATO, spokesman Drew Hammill said. Egypt was not on the itinerary.

The weekend trip had not been announced before Trump released his letter. Lawmakers often do not publicize foreign trips before they occur for security reasons, particularly when the trips involve a war zone as in this case.

"Due to the shutdown, I am sorry to inform you that your trip to Brussels, Egypt and Afghanistan has been postponed," Trump's letter said.

Trump told Pelosi she could make the trip by flying commercial.

"The purpose of the trip was to express appreciation & thanks to our men & women in uniform for their service & dedication, & to obtain critical national security & intelligence briefings from those on the front lines," Hammill said in a Twitter post.

The U.S. House Speaker normally uses a military plane for overseas travel and it was on that basis that Trump, as commander in chief, appeared to be acting.

"He postponed her ability to use military air," which must be approved by the Department of Defence, said White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders.

On Wednesday, Pelosi had written to Trump suggesting he postpone his Jan. 29 State of the Union address because of security concerns during the shutdown.

The government has been partially shut since Dec. 22, in a standoff triggered by Trump’s demand for $5.7 billion to fund a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border, which Democrats oppose.

Presidents traditionally deliver the nationally televised annual address, which lays out the administration’s goals for the year, in the House of Representatives chamber before a joint session of Congress and the majority of the Cabinet.

Pelosi said earlier on Thursday that she had not received a response from the White House, and Trump did not respond to the suggestion in the letter.

Trump's action drew criticism from one of his Republican allies in the Senate.

"One sophomoric response does not deserve another," Republican Senator Lindsey Graham wrote on Twitter. He criticized Pelosi's move on the State of the Union as "blatantly political" but said, "President Trump denying Speaker Pelosi military travel to visit our troops in Afghanistan, our allies in Egypt and NATO is also inappropriate."

Straight out of the Trump (schoolyard) playbook.

If this whole Trump presidency is real, he should have been removed from office a long time ago.

However, I am beginning to suspect the whole MAGA thing must be a pantomime. It is so unlikely and damaging, on the face of it, it can't be real.

Showing Nancy that she is not the one that is in charge.

So I take it Trump will himself remain in DC, no trips to Mar a largo, no golfing trips, no jollies at the tax payer’s expense.

This could save $tens of millions.

Trump doesn't even take his salary. He has remained in Washington through the whole holiday season, while the Dems are partying in Puerto Rico.

This guy makes me sick and I am not a US citizen.

He is an absolute ego manic with no disregard for anyone, it's all or nothing, whatever the cost to struggling families, ruthless, hale Trump.

We have a word for this type of moron, but he is now beneath that, so I am going to have to find a new one.

Spooking the markets? Maybe overseas but certainly not in the USA The Nasdaq is up around 12% the Dow and the S&P are up around 9% since the shut down. It is one of the best Januaries in history including the largest single intraday gain ever.

Let's remind ourselves if a president can't take credit for the market nor shall he be blamed. As far as world markets America is up and some other countries not so much. China is doing terrible there is news they want to make a deal. Who knows? We will see what happens.

Hahaha so apparently they were all already on the air force bus when trump issued the letter and they all had to disembark in shame and confusion ????

Reap what you sow, pelosi.

While Pelosi is still reeling from this pimp-slap, next step is announce that hes going to hold the State of the union in the Senate surrounded by Angel Moms and border patrol.

I guess while everyone was fawning over Pelosi trying to stop Trump from delivering his state of the union address, and attempting to deny him a platform to defend his actions publicly to the people over the shutdown, they forgot that he still is, you know, the President of the United States and commander in chief of the US military.

The funniest part is when they showed the Air Force bus presumably ready to go. Unload the bus excursion is cancelled. lol

*apologies to children for the denigrating reference.

Estimates he's gonna pick up $11,000,000 due to "help the poor hard up rich" tax bill that he signed. Mannafort worked for free (at least not paid by US sources... foreign... well....). Trump's nest egg getting fattened due to his bud in Russia plus "You will be staying at one of my fine hotels, won't you, before our meeting?"

The Greeks didn't bill the Trojans for that horse, did they?

There's no such thing as a free lunch

Beware anyone who pitches themselves saying "I'll work for free!" (but for whom?)

You know, nothing and no-one illustrates the hypocrisy of the left and their open borders agenda more than Donald Trump.

The same people carrying democrat water for trying to block Trumps state of the union and holding the furlowed workers pay hostage over .11% of the budget are enraged at Trumps move here. The hypocrisy is astounding.

Schumer the other day trotted out federal workers on the hill calling out President Trump for "holding their pay hostage" and for Trump to "LOOK AT THEM!" and the liberal media complies dutifully with its coverage, yet at the same time refuses to cover the Angel Moms out there who will never see their kids and family members again due to illegal aliens and the thousands and thousands of people who's lives have verb ruined by fentanyl laced drugs coming from south of the border.

Yeah, sorry not sorry. Workers will get paid, death and murder is forever.

Pelosi knows this is extremely bad for dems if Trump has a platform to blast their asses with, thats why she wants to block the state of the union. Trumps retaliation here is warranted and needs to be stronger next time, and during the state of the union - drag them.

First lady (wife of the president) going home (who is constantly under media attack and death threats) VS Democrat Politicians flying to spread their message that they are more than willing to send our young people to defend foreign borders with the risk of dying horrible deaths but unwilling to do the same in their homeland...

Nah. Dont even try it. Epitome of false equivalence.

She's been around the block a couple of times, she wanted to play, very well, Trump decided to play.

House takes over with a majority on Jan. 3 and after 2 weeks all the 435 members have done is come up with is a letter to postpone the SOTU?  Our congress needs to focus on recent domestic problems,  not go on trips to revisit 14,000 soldiers in a perpetual war with no goal and no end in sight (but that is another topic)
