It is amazing to me that the government does nothing about

It is amazing to me that anyone who has spent over a week in Thailand believes the government even has the ability to enforce something like this.  Take a look around at all of the dangers in Thailand.  I think day time driving lights is about number 754,917,008,421 on the list.

Maybe because.....

Public reaction to DRLs, generally neutral to positive in Canada, is decidedly mixed in the U.S. Thousands of complaints regarding glare from DRLs were lodged with the DOT shortly after DRLs were permitted on cars, and there was also concern that headlamp-based DRLs reduce the conspicuity of motorcycles,

The last I heard it was illegal to use dipped headlights during the day, that is reserved for Gov rides....????

But you are right, folk do not think about using lights at dawn or dusk or even after dark...Probably think their battery will last longer...????

But most new cars have the daylight driving lights that stay-on. Only basic car and pick-up do not have them.  It would be easy to pass regulation that you must drive with headlights on for older cars.

But there is no enforcement as on many Thai with new motorcycle  bypass the headlight always on  and install a switch.

As for police and VIP, they just have to get their emergency lights on and use their siren when they want priority.  Especially VIP and convoys  escort,

Yes safety is no an issue for them....

Its because ghosts follow the lights home. Thats the reason. Not battery saving or any such thing. Most mocy in my area pull the bulbs from the rear because theyre fkn nutcase scared weirdos.

police are scared of everything so do nothing... unless tou pay them and there friends...

I've heard it said that Thais think that by not operating lights, they are saving the battery.

Duhh

Girlfriend’s cousin disconnected his motorbike headlight because “he (usually) only rides in daytime and the lights made it use more petrol”.

OK, Somchai, whatever floats your boat ......

I do know what fog means as I grew up in a country where fog was an annual adventure, but as LOS doesn't have fog, or I have never heard of it, why do they fit spot (fog) lights on LOS rides..?

Yes, Thailand has fog.  Caused by cold air passing over warmer water of land.  Usually in the morning.

Try driving through the mountains or hills early in the morning.  You will see fog!

I find no utility in the OP not being proud of his country as it seemingly has no relationship to the "lights on" issue. The "lights on" in Thailand are not merely on the roadway. Safety has been "dimmed" for many years and will take many more roadway deaths to be turned "on".

Many years ago the Motorist Organizations in Australia started a campaign to have people put their lights on during the day. It lasted about 6 months until there were too many problems with the electrical systems in the cars that had their lights on. The electrics have probably improved since then but I open my eyes when driving so have no need to see someone's headlights during the day.

But I agree with others above that as soon as the daylight diminishes, heavy cloud, rain or dusk, the lights go on.

Woeaaaaaaaaaah they dont drive even with lights on in the night !! Or they are so bad you see them when you are close to them, specially trucks. ALmost got a heart attack when a car was driving with no light, on a non lighted road and even didnt have reflectors. I only could see a faint shadow moving from left to right.

In the U.S. (no I am not very proud of the U.S. at the moment)

Because still some people keep their “head lights” off ? ????????

Or because USA is not in your (personal) favor now ?!!! ????

In your favor or not, US was US and will be US and we are proud of at any time.

... In the U.S. (no I am not very proud of the U.S. at the moment) every car when started running lights must come on automatically.  It is no wonder to me why so many people are killed on the road.

Canada made DRL (daytime running lights) mandatory before the States, and Europe had their rear rain lights before that.
It’s simple, Be Safe - Be Seen !! Well, it helps at least. Motorbikes with operating tail lights are hard to find here. Brake lights are fewer ????????‍♂️

Here's an answer from a non-Nanny-Statist:   Reach down and turn your lights on if you believe they help.  Yeah?  I do.
Do I think the government should mandate it?  H*** no.  Like most Thai traffic laws, it's unenforceable 99.999% of the time anyway.

Some just don't like being told what do do and call it 'Nanny State' even when its for the benefit of everyone else...

I think the use of Day Time running lights on all moving vehicles should be law... I don't care whether someone thinks they need them on their vehicle or not... If it helps me and others see that vehicle it can prevent an accident.... thats the whole point - In cases such as this the government should be permitted to make decisions and laws for things some people are too stupid to think about themselves...  In many cases the 'Nanny State' as some like to call it protect people like me from the failure's in common sense of those who are usually seen bleeting about interference by the nanny-state....

Really...  What negative impact does it have on anyone if we have to use day time running lights? why even consider not using them?

They're automatically on, on my motorcycles and on my car the lights are on Auto all the time, meaning DTRL which automatically switch to headlights when dusk approaches.

LOS doesn't have fog? You obviously don't live anywhere near Chiang Rai or Fang. Every winter season.

as long as the ones who die are on motorbikes, I do not care so much...

That seems like a strange statement... You don't care if someone dies if they are on a motorcycle? but if someone in a car dies, you would care more????... OR... did you mean, if someone is riding their motorcycle and kills themselves as a result of their riding dangerously you would feel less empathy?

.... What about those who would ride their motorcycles without lights at night and get hit and killed by the driver of a car? - the car driver would feel terrible, no? wouldn't you?

For about 5 mins until i realised he was an ass anyway and a child could have been  by him...

I get your point... but isn't it better to have all of those '@$ses' controlled by the law so that we are no longer exposed to their stupidity...  either through their education or their fear of the fines they may incur...

When we consider that half the population is below average intelligence there is always another idiot to ride along stupidly, dangerously, without lights etc if they are 'self regulating'... But, make them fear for high fines and with some adequate policing we as other road users may be less exposed....  (I know I know.. thats dreamland !)

Possible i suppose if laws are backed up by Singapore type punishment, both physical and monetary. US dispense fines of 1800$ for Disabled Parking Bay abuse yet the nit moves out, another pops in.!.I think we all need an aspect of fear before we realy take notice.A hard line here financially only hurts dependants, plus they just run away. Not easy to say realy.:coffee1:. I can say im very carefull in S/pore,and Safe,

Why all these pages of discussion - it has been proven by more than one organization that DRL increase safety.

Yet some argue that it should not be mandatory.

Unbelievable

The Wiki page doesn't even have an entry for Asia, only these areas/countries:

5.1 European Union

5.1.1 Nordic countries

5.1.2 United Kingdom

5.2 Canada

5.3 United States

5.4 Australia

trouble is that imbeciles continue on DRLs (only) after Dusk...

they don't want to realise that Dashboard lights on modern dashes are always ON, against older cars that the dash becomes backlit, together when the Parkers are Switched on...

DRLs are only 'Parkers' when it becomes dark
