rooster59
UK PM May makes no change to demands in talks with EU leaders - report FILE PHOTO: Britain's Prime Minister Theresa May makes a statement following winning a confidence vote, after Parliament rejected her Brexit deal, outside 10 Downing Street in London, Britain, January 16, 2019. REUTERS/Clodagh Kilcoyne (Reuters) - British Prime Minister Theresa May made no change to her demands in talks with European Union leaders despite her Brexit plan being defeated by British lawmakers earlier this week, the Telegraph newspaper reported on Friday. May's demands continued to focus around either a legally binding time-limit for the Irish 'backstop'; a right for Britain to unilaterally withdraw, or a commitment to a trade deal finalisation before 2021 to prevent the backstop from coming into force, the report said, citing unnamed senior EU diplomatic sources. The backstop is an insurance policy designed to prevent the return of border checks on the frontier between EU-member Ireland and Northern Ireland. May repeated her demands in talks with Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte, German Chancellor Angela Merkel, French President Emmanuel Macron and Irish leader Leo Varadkar, the paper reported. On Friday night, May was also going to meet Arlene Foster, leader of the Northern Irish Democratic Unionist Party, which has 10 seats in parliament and supports May's government but not her Brexit deal, a Telegraph reporter said on Twitter. The meeting would also be attended by Nigel Dodds, deputy leader of the DUP. May's deal for Britain to leave the EU was defeated earlier this week by 230 votes. She has appealed to lawmakers to come together to try to break the impasse. REUTERS: 2019-01-
NanLaew
Got to keep Arlene onside. Her party's 10 votes were the difference between May or Corbyn as PM last Wednesday.

Chomper Higgot
The biggest defeat in a Parliamentary vote since the 1920s, and she’s making demands. If Arlene had commanded her 10 DUPes to change sides, May would have have been up to see Liz and tendered her resignation already. I know that the DUP aren't that short-sighted but with mainstream media all saying that May will 'comfortably' win the no confidence vote, the actual result was the stark reality. Not too much is being made of how the UK dodged THAT bullet... or the two Conservative MP's that didn't support her.

May has gone through the motions of pretending to want cross party talks but has no intention of shifting, she can’t change anything else Ministers will quit. Whilst Corbyn wont shift as he’s got his own agenda of causing maximum disruption to plan for another GE. Strangely his strategy may actually prove successfull in the end once the Tory front bench start stabbing each other shortly and he ends up having the last laugh. Utter shambles. Grouse
Certainly time for parliament to take back control from this incompetent, arrogant and cynical executive. I do hope some Tories have the guts to resign the whip and stand as independents.

Emdog
I'd like to see May simply say "Screw, I'm out of here. You think you can get a better deal? Good luck. BTW I have a London bridge you may want to buy."

She knows that: - no one would step up to replace her, because everyone knows it’s a deadlock and you can only lose; - it would then lead to a GE; - Tories would lose such GE. Good thing is, time is ticking, thanks to Theresa. So at some point, MPs need to make a decision for something, whether that’s hard Brexit, A50 withdrawal, or saving themselves but sacrificing the Tory party (by resigning). Brussels has made it clear that nothing substantial in the deal will change anyway. Trump/ America's representative has already made clear that a trade deal with the UK would be very difficult under the May deal. What does Britain have that America would want an interest in anyway? The NHS and maybe the City? They can make & do everything they want Stateside anyway, and Trump has made it clear that that's how he wants it. Under their rules, the Tories can't have another leadership challenge until December, and it doesn't look like Teresa-the-Appeaser is going anywhere otherwise, although she has mentioned no Brexit at all. A second referendum would take maybe a year to organise. Brussels has said that it's the May-deal and no other. Increasingly looking like a no-deal Brexit, all other options are quickly disappearing.
