Two monks shot to death in an ambush in Narathiwat

By The Nation

Two monks were killed while two others seriously injured after militants armed with war weapons opened fires on them at their temple in Narathiwat's Sungai Padi district on Friday night.

It appeared to be the first time that a Buddhist temple became the target of the attack.

Witnesses said a group of about ten men riding on motorcycles raided Rattananuparb Temple in tambon Tohdeng in the province at about 8.30pm.

They said some monks were fired at close range. One of the slain monks were Phra Kru Prachotirattananurak, chief monk of the district.

One of the monks was announced dead at a hospital nearby.

The ambush sent people living near the temple run for cover while some hid in their houses.

When security forces arrived at the scene, the attackers already fled the scene.

You mean muslim militants... the radicals from the religion of peace. Seems that Islam faith has radicals everywhere, in every country...

Why does every western nation have this compulsion to bring these people into their countries. They do not stimulate.

IMO, it all started with allowing the OPEC monopoly.....in no less than 50 years they've advance their world domination agenda through corruption of the westerners. Our media feeds us nonsense, and belittles anyone whose not PC to the global agenda. 1%rule the world through Islam brainwashing, and/or elimination. IMO

Agreed, islam says join us or die basicly, the koran clearly states the world must have the right to so no to this religion and condemn the barbaricness of it.

Well, we do not know if these guys were local, or traveled from elsewhere, to cause trouble. Also, without being too presumptuous, we would need to know more about the monks. As many of us know, some are not all that innocent. In regard to allowing Muslims to come to Thailand, herein lies the need for assimilation. I believe that any nation, (certainly the US and Europe is included in this debate) that is able to look forward, with any degree of vision, would have to start vetting any Muslim wanting to gain asylum, and make sure they do not sympathize on any level with Sharia, Wahhabism, or any other form of extremism. Learning the local language, showing an interest in local culture, not remaining within only their own cliques, perhaps encouraging their teen daughters to participate in dancing, music, fashion shows, and discouraging the use of Niqabs, and especially Burqas. There is just no place for the them in modern society. Hajibs, Saylas, and Chadors are fine, if the woman wants to be very modest.

Thai women enjoy many rights. Those same rights should be accorded to any woman who becomes a Thai immigrant. If the family is not fine with that, they should not have been allowed to move here, in the first place.

I still believe that 95% of Muslims worldwide are peace loving, and moderate. I have met alot who condemn the nonsense. But the other 5%, and the extremists sure give them an enormous PR issue to deal with.

You some what right on the peaceful one, but if they believe the koran then killing the infadel is the requirement and if they stand there peaceful ground then they too can be killed is simply evil so assimilatewill never happen

The ethnic cleansing continues.

Christians have a rather chequered past that I'm sure they would rather we didn't remember, as have a few of the other faiths!

Religion & politics have killed more people than anything and are seemingly above retribution.

The Koran is a difficult scripture to understand. On the one hand it preaches tolerance and understanding. On the other hand it appears to incite violence against non believers. There are some Muslims who are speaking out, about the many contradictions within the faith. This one is thoughtful:

Please question yourselves. Isn’t this compulsive following of a man who lived 1400 years ago leading us to doom in a changing world? Do the followers of any other religion follow one man in such an all-encompassing way? Who are we deceiving, them or ourselves? Dear brothers and sisters, see how our Umma (people) has sunk into poverty and how it lags behind the rest of the world. Isn’t it because we are following a religion that is outdated and impractical? In this crucial moment of history, when a great catastrophe has befallen us and a much bigger one is lying ahead, should not we wake up from our 1400 years of slumber and see where things have gone wrong? Hatred has filled the air and the world is bracing itself for its doomsday. Should we not ask ourselves whether we have contributed, wittingly or unwittingly, to this tragedy and whether we can stop the great disaster from happening?

And like most scriptures, it is open to interpretation. This is a reasonable interpretation, which completely contradicts the "kill the infidel" mantra.

The verse of the Holy Quran is often mentioned to malign Islam. The verse does not say infidels it says idolaters. (9:5) And when the forbidden months have passed, kill the idolaters wherever you find them and take them prisoners, and beleaguer them, and lie in wait for them at every place of ambush. But if they repent and observe Prayer and pay the Zakat, then leave their way free. Surely, Allah is Most Forgiving, Merciful.

The Thai-Malay border has vacillated many times over the centuries.   As recent as WW2, Thailand annexed several of Malaysia's northern states, only to cede control directly following the war.

Interesting to note from the map below that the indigenous populations of present-day southern Thailand as far north as Phuket are ethnically Malay.

Blood is thicker than water.
