Two monks shot to death in an ambush in Narathiwat

By The Nation

Two monks were killed while two others seriously injured after militants armed with war weapons opened fires on them at their temple in Narathiwat's Sungai Padi district on Friday night.

It appeared to be the first time that a Buddhist temple became the target of the attack.

Witnesses said a group of about ten men riding on motorcycles raided Rattananuparb Temple in tambon Tohdeng in the province at about 8.30pm.

They said some monks were fired at close range. One of the slain monks were Phra Kru Prachotirattananurak, chief monk of the district.

One of the monks was announced dead at a hospital nearby.

The ambush sent people living near the temple run for cover while some hid in their houses.

When security forces arrived at the scene, the attackers already fled the scene.

You mean muslim militants... the radicals from the religion of peace. Seems that Islam faith has radicals everywhere, in every country...

Why does every western nation have this compulsion to bring these people into their countries. They do not stimulate.

IMO, it all started with allowing the OPEC monopoly.....in no less than 50 years they've advance their world domination agenda through corruption of the westerners. Our media feeds us nonsense, and belittles anyone whose not PC to the global agenda. 1%rule the world through Islam brainwashing, and/or elimination. IMO

Agreed, islam says join us or die basicly, the koran clearly states the world must have the right to so no to this religion and condemn the barbaricness of it.

Well, we do not know if these guys were local, or traveled from elsewhere, to cause trouble. Also, without being too presumptuous, we would need to know more about the monks. As many of us know, some are not all that innocent. In regard to allowing Muslims to come to Thailand, herein lies the need for assimilation. I believe that any nation, (certainly the US and Europe is included in this debate) that is able to look forward, with any degree of vision, would have to start vetting any Muslim wanting to gain asylum, and make sure they do not sympathize on any level with Sharia, Wahhabism, or any other form of extremism. Learning the local language, showing an interest in local culture, not remaining within only their own cliques, perhaps encouraging their teen daughters to participate in dancing, music, fashion shows, and discouraging the use of Niqabs, and especially Burqas. There is just no place for the them in modern society. Hajibs, Saylas, and Chadors are fine, if the woman wants to be very modest.

Thai women enjoy many rights. Those same rights should be accorded to any woman who becomes a Thai immigrant. If the family is not fine with that, they should not have been allowed to move here, in the first place.

I still believe that 95% of Muslims worldwide are peace loving, and moderate. I have met alot who condemn the nonsense. But the other 5%, and the extremists sure give them an enormous PR issue to deal with.

Not in the case of Thailand where the assimilation was and continues to be forced integration of resident Muslims in the South into a foreign Buddhist nation.

The southern Malay Muslim culture has been resident in the (what is now the three southern Thai provinces) south for hundreds of years that began as part of the independent Kingdom of Patanni.

The Kingdom of Thailand was the invader.

It all started with a piece of paper........

"In 1947, Haji Sulong, founder of the Patani People's Movement, launched a petition campaign, demanding autonomy, language, and cultural rights, and implementation of Islamic law. In January 1948, Sulong was arrested on treason charges along with other local leaders branded as "separatist". Sulong was released from jail in 1952, then disappeared under mysterious circumstances in 1954."

.........from people with zero interest in "world dominion".

The nature of this attack probably indicates that those who do have such an interest are probably now active in Thailand.

Had Thailand, all those years ago, chosen to return the disputed area back under the auspices of the traditional ethnic area from which it was torn, in an agreement between UK and Thailand, there would be no "story" to tell about how it turned, and became, as violent as it is today.

The people in that area would just be getting on with their ordinary Malaysian lives.

Failure to give up its occupation of the area brings Thailand to where it is now.

It will now have to deal with real Jihadis.

Hotel and other tourist attacks are now to be expected.

The ethnic cleansing continues.

Christians have a rather chequered past that I'm sure they would rather we didn't remember, as have a few of the other faiths!

Religion & politics have killed more people than anything and are seemingly above retribution.

The Koran is a difficult scripture to understand. On the one hand it preaches tolerance and understanding. On the other hand it appears to incite violence against non believers. There are some Muslims who are speaking out, about the many contradictions within the faith. This one is thoughtful:

Please question yourselves. Isn’t this compulsive following of a man who lived 1400 years ago leading us to doom in a changing world? Do the followers of any other religion follow one man in such an all-encompassing way? Who are we deceiving, them or ourselves? Dear brothers and sisters, see how our Umma (people) has sunk into poverty and how it lags behind the rest of the world. Isn’t it because we are following a religion that is outdated and impractical? In this crucial moment of history, when a great catastrophe has befallen us and a much bigger one is lying ahead, should not we wake up from our 1400 years of slumber and see where things have gone wrong? Hatred has filled the air and the world is bracing itself for its doomsday. Should we not ask ourselves whether we have contributed, wittingly or unwittingly, to this tragedy and whether we can stop the great disaster from happening?

https://centerforinquiry.org/blog/a-call-to-the-muslims-of-the-world/

And like most scriptures, it is open to interpretation. This is a reasonable interpretation, which completely contradicts the "kill the infidel" mantra.

The verse of the Holy Quran is often mentioned to malign Islam. The verse does not say infidels it says idolaters. (9:5) And when the forbidden months have passed, kill the idolaters wherever you find them and take them prisoners, and beleaguer them, and lie in wait for them at every place of ambush. But if they repent and observe Prayer and pay the Zakat, then leave their way free. Surely, Allah is Most Forgiving, Merciful.

The Thai-Malay border has vacillated many times over the centuries.   As recent as WW2, Thailand annexed several of Malaysia's northern states, only to cede control directly following the war.

Interesting to note from the map below that the indigenous populations of present-day southern Thailand as far north as Phuket are ethnically Malay.

Blood is thicker than water.

Don't you think you have the story backward? Rama 5 gave the British the 4 most northern provinces on the peninsula so that the British could form the Federated Malay States, Pattani had been gone for hundreds of years prior! This "revolution" is merely a group of "bandits" (Mafia), if there was enough work for the population and the communities had pride in their history do you think these guys would get the support they get from the local community? Their members are all disaffected young men, if they had a chance to create meaningful lives would they be behaving in this "derring do" manner?

I read the article and don't see that it positively identifies the assailants as Muslim.

That's been the Thai military's talking points since the Prayut military coup in May 2014:

Pracharat Ruam Jai projects foster unity in the South

YALA, 2 May 2016, (NNT) - The Army Region 4 Commander is confident that the government's Pracharat Ruam Jai projects would unite the people of the South and address their ongoing issues.

Army Region 4 Commander Lt. Gen. Wiwat Patompak said the objectives of these projects include reducing violence, pacifying dissidents, promoting unity, fostering mutual understanding, tackling the hardships of local residents, and improving the quality of life.

the southern unrest cannot be tackled through political means but rather the use of development and education - PM Prayut, Aug. 30, 2016 https://forum.thaivisa.com/topic/940236-pm-prayut-resolution-of-southern-unrest-requires-time/?page=2&tab=comments#comment-11099575

The reality is: As long as the Thai state rides roughshod over the Patani Malay narrative of cultural and historical difference, a new crop of separatist insurgents will always resurface to take up where the previous generation left off.  Apr 14, 2017

http://www.nationmultimedia.com/news/opinion/guest_columnist/30312244

The insurgency is about politics and preservation of Islamic culture and traditions, not economic needs.

The sooner political pressure by the Thai People increases against traditional failed military strategies to resolve the southern conflict, the sooner peace can be achieved in the southern provinces.

Wishful thinking there my friend.. They all want Sharia law, it’s Islamic law, the law of their religion. They will never assimilate into any western countries, the proof is in the pudding.

Getting back on topic with specific regard to the Muslim majority in southern Thailand, they have never been migrants into the Kingdom of Thailand. They did not voluntarily seek nor willingly permit to become Kingdom of Thailand citizens and have their religion, laws, culture and traditions assimilated by a Buddhist regime.
