Border run

Recommended Posts

Hello. Okay, a man with a British passport entered into Thailand from Britain, via airport, with a sixty day tourist visa. This was in early November, 2018.  Okay, in early Jan. 2019, he went to Laos by a land border and came back into Thailand on the same day, and got a 30 day stamp, great.

Okay, in early Feb. , in about two weeks time, what if he goes to Laos again, via a land border ? If he comes back into Thailand on the same day, using the same land border , will Thailand again, give him a 30 day stamp ?

Thanks for any comments.

The is no need to get another entry after the 30 day visa exempt entry ends since a 30 day extension of it can be applied for at immigration for a fee of 1900 baht.

If another 30 day visa exempt entry is done at a land border crossing it would not be a problem but he would not be able to get another one this year since only 2 per calendar year are allowed.

This is answered in, probably, an average of two threads each day. There is no official limit on visa exempt entries by air. However, immigration officials have a lot of discretion on whether to admit you. Especially, if they judge you are using visa exempt entries to spend extended periods in Thailand, some officials are liable to use their discretion to deny you entry. One factor is that immigration officials receive an alert if you have six or more visa exempt entries since around the middle of 2015. The alert is intended to advise officials to scrutinise you more closely as a genuine tourist. Some treat the alert as important; some officials ignore it.

TLDR : Do not use visa exempt entries by air if you have either spent 90 days or more out of the last 12 months in Thailand; or if you have six or more visa exempt entries since the middle of 2015 (unless the durations of your stays were short). Use tourist visas, unless very inconvenient, if you expect to spend time in Thailand in the future. This gives you a better chance of being granted a visa exempt entry if you need one in an emergency. For more details, scan other threads that discuss this murky issue.
