Chiang Mai cop faces "quick" expulsion - no more backhanders in the city, RTP

Police in Chiang Mai seem to be making an example of the policeman caught taking a bribe from a Chinese tourist. 

 

And a top cop has promised no more bribes after the case embarrassed the Royal Thai Police.

 

The RTP are saying that Cherngchai Wongburinphan could face expulsion from the force if found guilty. 

 

With top brass stating yesterday that the officer was clearly seen taking a bribe, guilt seems a foregone conclusion. 

 

Daily News reported that Chiang Mai police chief Maj-Gen Phichet Jiranantasin had ordered Cherngchai's immediate transfer to clerical duties while an investigative committee looks into the case. 

 

The cop - caught pocketing 200 baht for un-clamping a rented motorbike rather than processing a ticket - will face both internal disciplinary procedures and criminal prosecution if there is found to be a case to answer.

 

Phichet put Pol Col Phaisan Nanta in charge of the matter while a speedy -  that's 30 days - open, fair and just investigation with justice to all parties was proposed. 

 

Phaisan called a meeting of traffic cops in the northern city to tell them in no uncertain terms that no bribes were to be taken.

 

All fines were to be done by tickets paid for at the station according to regulations. 

 

He spoke of the loss of face for the force in this damaging matter saying that the officer concerned could face the maximum penalty of expulsion from the force.

No mention of charging him with what appears to be a blatant criminal offence then? Given the cops routinely collect money from businesses and road users continuously, I somehow suspect that this matter is going to quietly die away and we will never hear what terrible punishment the officer in this case doesn't receive.

OH Come on! The Chinese guy was wrong, and the cop saved him from going to the station. If the Thai people want everything above board, then they better fully be prepared as they are not going to like it one bit when the law turns around like a western country. Be careful for what you wish for, as it is not what you think in the end. This small piddly nothing that some arse ole Thai posted video of is going to come back a screw the system as more Junta driven laws will be enforced. The big Thai muckity mucks just don't care as they are unfazed. Cops don't make enough already. So what is going to happen, no cops as is not a profession one wants to do anymore and install the military to do their job? Stupid people. Small corruption like this is totally fine! Hurts no one!

I argue that this is ok for the police to do. Why? Tourist are in a foreign country. They do not know the language. they probably cannot find the police station. They may not fully understand the law...cannot read the signs. They can be very confused with a ticket...I was when I got one.

By taking the 200b on the spot is a God send for the tourist. It is a huge benefit for them. Keep it simple. teach a lesson and then let the tourist enjoy their holiday.

As long as it is not over priced and fair.

In your opinion, what is the dividing line between small corruption and big corruption and is that dividing line different for the wealthy and the poor?

I think you might mean Sanit Mahathavorn, erstwhile metropolitan chief of police.
