A motorbike driver has died as a result of injuries sustained when his motorbike collided, head on, with a mini van.

Kamala rescue workers were notified of the incident on the Patong-Kamala road at 20.57 pm last night. The head-on collision happened just near the entrance to Nakalay Palm condo.

There appeared to be another bike behind the car being overtaken. The rider who died may have been focusing on overtaking two vehicles at an irresponsibly high speed and just hoped by tucking in close to the centre line, he could force oncoming vehicles to yield on to the hard shoulder.

My observation of Thais overtaking (particularly motorbikes) is that they first position themselves very close to the car's rear offside bumper. Then they pop out. The thinking may be the further forward they are the quicker they can get past or there may be no thinking at all. The reality is that they commence the overtaking manouevre blind. This is very dangerous.

Before overtaking the driver should be able to see the whole manouevre from start to finish in his mind. If you have no idea what vehicles if any are oncoming, then this mental imagery is impossible and overtaking is like playing Russian roulette.

For once the van driver appears to be blameless. He was definitely in his own lane when the bike suddenly veered out of the traffic at high speed and impacted him. No time to avoid it.

No word yet on the deceased nationality.

From the article: UK citizen.

Was there contact between the two oncoming motorbikes causing the victim to swerve into the oncoming van ?

It doesn't look like it on the video. I understand where you're coming from, it was strange to just veer off to his right.

<snip>

He was still far away from the car when he veered off course, and he was also way over the centre line.

Your thinking is contradicted by the facts of the video.

What does this have to do with a Brit on a bike?

Just as he passes the other bike the victims bike leans to the right and he veers across the road. It looks like contact of some kind was made,

Apart from the clear statement that he was a UK citizen.

Speed played a part and looked like an involuntary control input (was not a normal change of direction) he looked like he was bobbing on a bit and just as it seems like he was about to make contact with the leading bike his machine makes the strange turn input that puts him in arms way into oncoming traffic.

Did the lead rider jump on his brakes behind the vehicle in front when the rider behind thought they were both going for it and was going to overtake the vehicle? Did Alcohol play a part in poor judgement? A medical emergency?? we don't know...

Either way Mini van driver not at fault and lucky he was not injured or worse

RIP to the rider

And has been indicated multiple times already by other posters.

Yes, I missed that part of the report and you corrected me..

The other two posters who found it necessary to continue to highlight my error are people I've called out on bigger issues elsewhere.

This pettiness is their way of getting back at me.
