rooster59
Chiang Mai woman thought she'd get two million dollars! - loses 1 million baht to Romance Scammers instead Image: Sanook A Chiang Mai woman thought she had found love - and wealth - when she met a handsome stranger on Facebook. But it turned out to be a gang of Nigerian and Thai romance scammers who fleeced her of a million baht instead. Region 5 police yesterday announced the arrest of Nigerian K.C., aged 40, and his Thai girlfriend Kasinan, 28. Two others were also nabbed. A computer with lots of names of Thai women on Facebook was taken into evidence. The suspects were charged with fraud, misrepresentation and being involved with crime across international borders. The latest arrests are people who are part of an 18 member group of scammers most of whom are in custody. The latest victim and the modus operandi of the con followed a familiar pattern. She was befriended on Facebook with the gang using the picture of a handsome foreigner in a profile. Chat soon turned to "love" and marriage was proposed. She was told that she would be sent two million US dollars to buy a house and other items in Thailand. She was beguiled by the Thai women in the gang who posed as customs officers over the phone saying that money needed to be paid to facilitate various matters. She transferred money in excess of one million baht in several lots before the penny finally dropped and she reported the matter to police. Pol Col Thawatchai Pongwiwatchai a deputy commander at the Region 5 police said that there are likely many more victims of the gang yet to come forward. Most are lonely and retired Thai women over 40 years of age. Source: Sanook -- © Copyright Thai Visa News 2019-01-

lordblackader
I don't know who is doing your translations but you might want to hire a new person because there are fundamental things wrong with this vs what Thai language media actually reported. HLover
Strange, Nigeria is known for their solid and reputable business practices conducted with high moral standards. Too bad she was fooled as a rational person (as insinuated above) would surely believe 1 million will double in value. Especially an alien or online virtual entity presented the deal. Good to see pops lending a helping hand as a police liaison.

fantom
You have to remember these scammers are good. They do this for a living and it's business. They get up in the morning and start work with the team. I hesitate to blame those who fall for these grifters and would much prefer to see more information on how to detect them. Also would like to see the original story.

It says she was expecting 2 million dollars. That would be approximately 64 million baht.

And soon you are in love because you feel exactly the same (remember, you published on facebook all the thinks you like). What do you do next? a) meet in person to get see how much you love each other b) send or receive very expensive gifts or cash I am sure all these women who met their dream lover could have rejected the gift and just tell him: Let's meet here or there and we share the cost. But that's not what they did...
Sydebolle
Nail the cheater, no worries about that. What might be interesting though is how many women are cheated out of money by their lovely fellow countrymen; why does latter hardly makes any news? To me it is the pure greed of the species of women who think, that somebody has to take care of them ultimately. Nowhere it is written but in many places it is expected. Serves 'em right!
