roo860
There's a topic going on about a Thai girl band wearing clothing with a Nazi swastika logo on it. Have any of you teachers seen any literature available IN Thai classrooms to explain the above people? Acharn
The Promoters, the Thai military officers and bureaucrats who overthrew King Prajadiphok in 1932, were divided but all tended toward authoritarianism. The officers, led by Luang Phibunshongkhram, were mostly great admirers of the German Nationalist Socialist Workers Party and their leader. The others were great admirers of the Japanese militarists who ruled through assassination and thuggery (there was actually a civilian government, but the soldiers bullied them into compliance). Many of the civilians were ardent Socialists and even Communists, but they were quickly pushed out of pwer. After the Japanese invaded in December 1941, Phibulsongkhram (who had already made himself dictator) issued many decrees mimicking features of both countries. Successive governments issued claims against "lost territories," mostly parts of Laos that the French seized when they ran Laos, but had been seized by Siam after they destroyed Vieng Chan in 1827 and some areas that had been part of the Kingdom of Lanna but were seized by the Burmese. It's a very interesting period of Thai history. Anyway, although I don't think Thai textbooks have much to say about that period. It was kind of humiliating for the Thai, the way the Japanese bullied them during the occupation. I think it's just that the Nazi symbolism connects with something deep in the human psyche. I find the Swastika flag and other Nazi memorabilia surprisingly attractive, and I still have not gotten over the photographs from Buchenwald and Marienstadt published in Life Magazine in 1947. allanos
The swastika symbol was used and embraced for thousands of years, by various religions and cultures, long before the Nazis adopted it in the 1930's. The Nazi Party was banned in October of 1945 and a denazification process was introduced by the occupying powers, which included banning the swastika. We live in a PC world. There is clearly an emotional connection to the horrors of the concentration camps which were perpetrated on Jews, gypsies, homosexuals, Slavs, etc, for Jews and others, and which also suits the Israelis, politically, to fan the flames of whenever they can. I don't think this youthful Thai band had any idea what they were bringing down on themselves.
thailand49
Why should anyone be surprised, You see the helmets the T-shirts sold here, ask a Thai and they have no idea what it means world events or history aren't taught in Thai government schools it is basically Thailand is the center of the earth if your kid is looking for an easy grade to prop up their average just make sure they show up early to sing the national song at 8 am. Then if you screw someone over go to a Temple buy the recycling baskets and flowers donate 20 baht and off you go again to do someone wrong all over again. Each and every time it makes huge waves on social media . So this youths should have been aware, even if they do not know the reason for it

owenm
A casual walk along Khaosan Road, 50m from the police station, there is a market vendor selling TS with swastika and Nazi Hitler shirts on open display.. They haven't an idea!! In Bali they have used the swastika on clothing for decades, but the symbol is in reverse and no relation to Nazi Germany.. It's more cultural in Indonesia.. Spidey
This is the 3rd thread started on exactly the same topic, in the last 24 hours. Is it really that much of an issue for expats living in Thailand? Get a life guys.
Lacessit
The swastika used by the Nazis is a reversal of the swastika which appeared in many other cultures.
roo860
I started this thread, because on the other one someone suggested to ask foreign teachers if they had come across anything in Thai classrooms ref the title of this topic. One poster said he'd seen this, and replied to the poster that doubted him to post a topic in the Teaching section. So instead I did. I'm not an expat, I'm a snowbird. I don't think they learn much history outside Thailand at all. I've met college educated Thais who hasn't even heard of Khmer Rouge and Pol Pot. And that happened not so long ago and next door. champers
Why should Thais have any interest in Hitler and Stalin? Neither had a direct impact on their daily lives. Are they any less ignorant than the millions of Westerners who wear Hugo Boss products?

Sydebolle
I've been wondering what is taught in Thai classrooms, considering 12 years of school followed by a few years in "university" - which is payable. We all know that it is not common sense, foreign languages, social values nor cooking classes - being taught. History is non-existent, likewise geography, physics or most other useful things or skills for daily life. I've been interviewing graduates in "political science" and "business administration"; you do not want to know what gruesome experience that was ???? For all I know is that the education curve ends with "practicing" three to five full days to receive their degree - after 15 years of "education". Over to you; I - for one - consider the local education system not only doomed but quite obviously and purposely kept that way round to keep the masses at bay; poorly or non-educated electorate make easier voters ???? Those who could invoke chances are the same people who benefit of the status quo. Go figure!
Suradit69
A surprising number of Europeans and Americans know Ver little about what happened during WWII ... and there certainly have been plenty of TV shows that have treated the Nazis has a source of comedy. " Quote Many Europeans don’t know much about the Holocaust, and anti-Semitic beliefs are still fairly widespread among residents of at least seven European countries, according a recent CNN/ComRes survey. A combined third of European respondents said they knew “just a little” about the Holocaust (30 percent) or had “never heard” of it (4 percent), per the CNN poll, which was carried out in September. . The survey found that anti-Semitic views are common in Europe, with 1 in 10 respondents saying they feel unfavorably toward Jews in their country. (Over a third said they feel unfavorably toward Muslims.) More than a quarter of respondents said they believe Jews have too much influence in business and finance, and about 1 in 5 said Jews have too much influence in media and politics. When it comes to knowledge of the Holocaust, Americans don’t fare much better. According to a survey of Americans earlier this year, 11 percent either had not heard of the Holocaust or weren’t sure whether they’d heard of it. And more than 40 percent did not know what Auschwitz was ― perhaps the most infamous of the Nazis many concentration camps."
