Canadian pensioner in custody after sneaking into Thailand through hole in the fence

A Canadian pensioner told Thai immigration police that he sneaked into Thailand through a hole in the fence.

He was arrested while trying to go back into Cambodia.

Robert Fortin, 67, was found to have no Thai entry stamp in his passport.

He told a convoluted and changing story story that Thai immigration officers found hard to believe, said Naewna in its report.

He said that he had been ushered over the border behind the Rong Kleua market in Poi Pet through a hole in the fence. He said he came with a Cambodian "agent" whose name he did not know.

He paid the agent 5,000 baht to get a Thai entry stamp, he claimed. The agent took his passport and then contacted him to say he had got the entry stamp and he was free to go back across the border.

Fortin said he didn't realize there was actually no such stamp in his passport.

He is now in the cells at Klong Leuk police station on illegal entry charges.

Naewna did not report on where the suspect lives.

I know similar, authentic story:organized small tourist group entered Thailand using international train from Malaysia.Somehow they missed Thai immigration! No entry stamps! They realized their mistake only much

later, too late..... in Bangkok. They approached their consulate for help and advice.Consul simply panicked and threatened them with the prospect of BangkokHilton. They ignored his warnings and reported to Immigration

Office, after couple of hours they were cleared with  stamps/notes in their passports,no fines!all smiles...

Later they published story in their homeland.

Something missing from this story. One wonders if the cops are looking for the immigration agent, who can undoubtedly fill in the blanks. The guy must have thought he had an entry stamp, or he would be super stupid trying to walk through the border immigration checkpoint knowing he didn't have one.

Was he trying to sneak back through the same fence, or did he get cought at the Immi border?

He was well ripped off.nong khai or chang Khan boats will do it for 1,000b.as for the stamp he never got it would of been no use as it wasn't recorded with immo that he entered the country.must of been despo to get here, maybe to sort out finance after being blacklisted or see his family.who knows but he's up to his neck in brown stuff now.

what stands out is the fact that he had issue going from Cambodia to Thailand but not the other direction, there could be several reasons for this some already mentioned

I suspect there is information known to Thai authorities about this person that is being witheld

That sounds like the actions  and helpfulness of most embassies , of whatever country, around the world, totally hopeless.

Which one is the Canadian?  Why is no one pointing?  Very confusing.

See?  See?  Sneaky Canadians, same as the sneaky Mexicans, shamelessly violating international borders!  Someone forward this news to the president of the US.

New slogan: build the wall, Canadians are tall!

I can see where DT could expand on this, telling the story of David and Goliath but swapping in Paul Bunyan as an illegal immigrant from Canada and David a North Dakota farm boy.

[just a little bit of intra-North America humor]

How much brown stuff exactly? Hundreds from neighbouring states are picked up every week for entering illegally, what happens to them.

Ever notice that they never mention that a person's detention has been reported to his embassy?

In an article that is barely longer than 300 words, are you surprised? They also didn't mention what he was fed for dinner either, presumably because it's not hugely salient to the story

Can someone tell me what's the point of doing something like this? Couldn't he just enter Thailand the normal way and actually pay less too?

According to the Canadian's story, he appears to have been scammed in Poi Pet. Thus making him appear (if it infact is) a victim (and perhaps someone not that bright) and less of a criminal.

Basically, according to the Canadian, he paid 5000 baht to get into the country, and they had his passport. He may have very well been scammed, there are so many scammers in poi pet border who will grab your passport from your hands and you are screwed, you now have to buy their "service" or you don't get your passport back. They specifically look for easy to con marks (weak willed people) to do this to. It's possible, not for sure, but possible, that he was just scammed this way. They took his passport, said he had to pay for their service, and he just obliged in order to get it done and over with. A lot of people are shy like that.

When your up to your neck in brown stuff you don't care wether it's as much as the sea or as small as a paddling pool, your up to your neck in it.as for the illegals from neighbouring countries, they've probably not got 2 baht coins in their pockets and just get thrown out directly and don't even see IDC else it would be overflowing with 10s of 1,000s.best keep the farang and squeeze the life out of them and just bus the neighbours to the nearest border crossing to their country.when they were rounding up illegals working the other year there were reports of the police mugging them before transporting them to the borders.
