Three 13-year-old girls were killed on Sunday when they lost control of the motorcycle they were riding on a curve and smashed into a 10-wheel truck in the opposite lane.

The crash took place at 1pm near Wat Nong Ngu Luam in Tambon Nong Ngu Luam in Nakhon Pathom’s Muang district.

The three girls were identified as Thiwaporn Chanpong, 13, Pathitta Inprai, 13, and Sujitra Butrpha, 13. All three were Grade 7 students at Rachinee Burana School in Nakhon Pathom's Muang district.

Their two friends, boys attending the same school, who were on another motorcycle, waited for police at the scene.

The three girls were riding the same motorcycle, which slid under the truck after the impact.

The truck driver, Sayan Boonthiam, 48, told police that he was driving from Ratchaburi’s Bang Pong district to deliver soil to a client in Nakhon Pathom’s Muang district when the accident occurred.

Sayan said he saw the girls overtake their friends before losing control and hitting hit his truck head-on. When he stopped, he discovered all three had been killed outright.

The two boys told police they were returning from a friend’s house Tambon Prong Madua where they had been working on a school project. They said the bike accelerated to overtake them on the curve, lost control and strayed into the oncoming lane.

Three young lives lost through Thai stupidity............not only through poor driving skills but because the parents allow them to drive without supervision or training.

And of course the cops don't care/enforce the law of the land because there's no payout for them, not to mention laziness.

Such a crying shame. ????

RIP you three young souls.

Spot on. We all talk about how dangerous the Thai roads are for foreigners, but statistically speaking, this is what a whole heap of the road deaths look like - local, young, inexperienced, on a moto, presumably a lack of safety gear.

About 6 years ago I had a conversation with the developer of our moo bahn, who also live here, about letting his 14 year old daughter ride a new Honda motorbike to school, which was a good 8klm away on a major highway.  The girl was stunning, and could have easily been a model in a few years

I told him that he didn't really love his daughter if he let her ride at 14, which is under the legal age.  He was upset that I accused him of not loving her, saying she was the most precious thing in the world to him.  As for riding, she "looked older" (true), so it was ok, and besides, she was a good driver.

Just about a month later, the girl was crushed beneath s cement mixer that she tried to cut in front off.  My wife and I walked down to his house to express our condolences, and the man went totally crazy, yelling and screaming that it was my fault for talking about her being in an accident.  My wife, who seldom raises her voice, got right in his face and told him - "YOU killed your daughter the day you bought her a motorbike!"

We left then.  For the next month or so the man never spoke to me or my wife again, and finally sold their house to the people across the street from them and moved to Chiang Rai.

Unfortunately, non of those things prevent accidents. They may mitigate against certain injuries and pay for some of the costs, and assist with a degree of maturity. But they don't prevent anything. Only training, and police / parental action in preventing the un-trained from being on the road in the first place will do that. Neither of which appears to be improving.

It's the same in most poor, Third and Fourth World, under educated, lack of a true 'Rule of Law',  Countries,  which is what Thailand is and will remain.

It's a country where there is no proper transport system outside the main towns and cities and even then it is erratic and unreliable.  Parents at work and there is only the families motorbike to use.  That is why you see so many children riding around on these bikes.  It is the only choice they have for many poor families.  Same as most poor third world countries.

It's wrong and it's sad.  But that is why the police turn a blind eye and until there is a viable alternative, they will continue to do so.

Understand your point entirely. It's  also why I try to be tolerant of those jury rigged motorbike/side car combinations that cruise around at 10 mph, screwing up the traffic.  If that's the only way for a family to earn money, then we all have to put up with it.  As you say, sad but true.

I suspect the girls were trying to show the boys that they were just as good at riding mocy. One of the few things in life they can be independent at?

You're right.

How do you she was inexperienced?

she had been riding since she was ten!

Oh come on give me a break.........

So at the age of 10 she got on the road not knowing any road code, drills or how to read road conditions or perhaps what other drivers are going to do and that mindset prevailed until the day of her death.

There was an old saying once where you would ask somebody how much experience they had in a particular job and they might say, "30 years experience in this job", and the reply would be, "is that actually 30 years experience learnt and built upon, or one years experience repeated every year for the next 30"?

I hope you can see my point, because driving since the age of 10 means nothing whatsoever if nothing has been learnt.
