Farangs in Thailand: "They break the rules but the authorities protect them"

The daughter of the Thai woman trying to evict a British man for not paying the rent at a Phuket condo has has hit back ranting about foreigners online.

She is furious that special consideration if shown to "farangs" who break the rules.

She has claimed that after a British Embassy visit the man was encouraged to stay on "for the sake of international relations".

She has called it a joke saying the Brit was shown Thai kindness but enough is enough.

The latest events in the drama follow a more than two week standoff after Australian born Brit David Maclean, 50, barricaded himself into his 9th floor room at Supalai Park.

Earlier Utumporn Tantivit said that Mr Maclean owes her 8,000 baht. He signed a six month contract then refused to pay any more.

Fears grew at the weekend that the Brit may jump and an air cushion was set up by firemen.

Now Utumporn's daughter Sutasinee Anantanawat has gone on Facebook saying she is feeling angry on behalf of her mum.

She claimed her mother had not been paid rent and wanted him out for breaking his contract. But she said he refused and wanted a lawyer. She said he sent an email to the British embassy in Bangkok saying that he was being kept prisoner by her mother and alleging that she had threatened him.

She said that concerned embassy officials sent a representative.

But instead of taking the landlady's side they gave him food and water and suggested that in the interest of international relations he should stay on.

"I couldn't believe it. What does he want?," ranted the daughter. "Foreigners break the rules in Thailand and nothing is done. They are even protected.

"We are Thais and this is our country but we can't take any action. If it was someone from Burma they wouldn't be given this protection.

"He hasn't paid the rent and we want him out".

She said that Thais are kind. Mr Maclean had been shown this kindness when he was helpfully taken by the family to apply for an internet contract when he signed the rental agreement.

She asked those who visited her page to share her comments across social media.

While the Brit is refusing to show his face, the authorities are reluctant to break down the door.

However, it has been reported that when Mr Maclean's visa is up on February 21st they will have the power to do just that.

On another Facebook page a woman called Gade Anantanawat (the same surname as the landlady) said that attempts by her mother to get a news organisation to retract what she claimed was fake news had been met with the response: "Sue Us!".

To me it sounds like she is angry because farang can sometimes have the law on their side, too. It is well possible the man has mental problems, and the consulate is rightly assisting a citizen in need of help.

Apart from anything I have yet to meet the first farang that got his deposit back after termination of a rental agreement, so I am quite enjoying this spat....

Does anyone have the list of rules we can break where authorities will protect us? Seems she's confusing farangs for the local rich and elite here.

This does not ring true. BRITISH Embassy sent a representative ?

Now I just don't believe her - there is no way anyone from the British Embassy would do that.

My thoughts also, the British Embassy are generally very little help for anything and this just does not ring true. Or maybe they have more time on their hands not issuing income letters to their citizens nowadays.

Oh really, that's why a farang can get 100,000b fine for smoking on a beach and a farmer burning a 100 rai gets a 500baht fine if he's unlucky.no mention of the landlord not wanting to give a receipt for the rent.he didn't rent the house off the son or daughter who he originally asked when paying the rent.no receipt,no rent.simple as that....best bit of advice is never rent off a Thai who to me are the worst people to deal with except Nigerians.

I don't believe them. This guy might be overreacting (!) but he keep insisting he withheld the rent because the woman refused to give him a receipt. I find it hard to believe that he would simply refuse to pay the rent and lock himself in because he didn't have the money or didn't have any reasonable excuse.
Just ask the lady to show a copy of the receipt, or at least let her answer the question: did you refuse to give him a receipt, if so why?

..or jump from the 9th floor over this.  He seems like a well adjusted and level headed man who is just misunderstood.

Right, and maybe ask her if she registered him as a foreigner in her property at the immigration office (TM30)... I bet not!

Thais can also get fined for smoking on the beach , although the reality is that no one has been fined 100 000 B for smoking on a beach

What She says is true , if a Thai doesnt pay his rent , he would be forced, one way or another to leave the property , this guy is getting special protection because hes a Westerner .

Surely they could sort this issue out , without such a fuss ?

Madame may I say that you seem be be grabbing an opportunity to be xenophobic. ONE Brit who seems to have gone bonkers broke the rule.

Bullie, I got my deposit back. All 40,000 baht. It was spotless when I moved out which was the only thing the gracious landlord asked.

And I know quite a few others who have as well.

Fairly obvious whoever it is , she is talking utter nonsense.

not only she has no idea what British embassy told him as it was a discussion in private but the further nonsense about “ international relations”

How about following the law and going to court to seek eviction order?

no doubt he paid deposit , so technically speaking he has paid even though he may or may not have paid rent up to date.

Drink driving and smuggling drugs and alcohol are a different matter
