webfact 35,601 #1 Posted February 7 Knife wielding gang steal 30,000 baht in brazen early morning hotel robbery in Chiang Mai A three man gang armed with knives robbed the Airport Resident hotel in Mahidol Road, downtown Chiang Mai this morning. The deputy provincial police chief has ordered local cops to act fast to track the criminals in what he said was a brazen attack that could damage tourist confidence in the northern Thai city. Hotel staff member Yossakorn Detdiawying, 30, said that three men entered the hotel in the early hours with long sleeved shirts pulled over their heads. A scuffle ensued and the staffer was put in a head lock and told not to resist. But he did resist and was cut twice by another person in the gang. Injuries to his arm were not severe, however. The gang then ransacked the reception area and office before making off with 30,000 baht and the CCTV server. Yossakorn said that listening to the robbers they appeared to have foreign accents. They spent 20 minutes in the hotel, reported Daily News. They disappeared along Mahidol Road on a Honda Wave motorcycle. Deputy provincial police chief Pol Col Piyaphan Phatrapongsin was on the scene and ordered his local force to check CCTV in the area to get a lead and find the men quickly. Forensics were taking fingerprints. Such a brazen attack had the potential to damage tourism in the city, he said. They want tourists, they just don't want foreigners hanging around outstaying their welcome without the necessary funds to do so.
