Hitting a barrier while doing a u-turn can't get anyone killed. There must be more to this story...

If the story is true, it could be that she didn't wear any seat belt and the sudden impact hitting the barrier made her head smash into a window causing an intracranial hemorrhage. Falling of a skateboard and hitting one's head on the ground, not wearing a helmet, could cause equal damage.

We're talking about a U-turn, there's no speed involved, unless the driver tried to to it with engaging the handbrake.

At least, the story should be "she hit the barrier when she was trying to make a u-turn". Whatever she did, it went very wrong.
