Father, daughter killed in Lampang car crash

By The Nation

A father and his daughter were killed early on Saturday when their car careened off the road in Lampang and hit a tree.

Police say Rongthep Ratanapipit, 58, was driving his daughter Latthawan Ratanapipit, 22, from Chiang Mai to Bangkok to apply for master degree, when he apparently dozed off behind the wheel.

Police said the accident happened at 6.30am on the Lampang-Tak road in Ban Nong Bua Ban village in Tambon Lom Raed of Lampang's Thoen district.

The car crashed into a tree in the shallow and dry ditch in the middle of the road.

Police said there was no sign that the car had slowed down or the brakes had been applied so it is believed that the driver dozed off and the car came off the road and hit the tree.

Police learned from documents in the car that Latthawan was a university student in Chiang Mai with good study record. She was heading to Bangkok to apply for the government's scholarship to study in a masters degree course.

Presumed he dozed off... could have been many things

mechanical failure, illness, distracted

Seeing that it couldn’t be anymore than an hour so from where they may have started their journey (at a guess) you wouldn’t think it would be fatigue
