A group of fifty friends of a dead student attacked a cop after he allegedly shot their friend dead.

Minburi police went to the scene of the shooting of a fourth year engineering student from a Bangkapi tech school. Twenty two year old Ekkachai Bunrat had been hit four times by a 9mm gun and was lying dead in a pool of blood between Sois 6 and 8 in Rom Klao district.

He had a .38 gun in his jeans with six bullets still in it, an empty holster by his belt buckle and there was an empty .38 and two motorcycles lying nearby.

An unnamed injured man was taken to Nopparat Hospital.

Following the shooting a group of fifty of the dead student's friends started haranguing the police claiming that one of their undercover officers had shot their friend dead.

The object of their claims is the man in the red t-shirt in the news pictures.

The mob surrounded and banged on a police vehicle as the red t-shirt man took refuge from the rain.

He emerged from the vehicle and a melee ensued. According to press reports he produced his gun and said: "I'll shoot anyone who comes near".

He then fired two shots in the air.

When the crowd failed to disperse he shot four times into the mob with Thai Rath saying that he had endangered members of the public who were passing and reporters who were on the scene.

He was then whisked away in a police car.

A police spokesman said that shots were fired when an undercover team confronted two men in a drugs related incident. One man is in hospital.

An investigation has been ordered to find out what actually happened.

Irrespective of how the first person was shot, firing indiscriminately into a mob of people is quite simply a criminal act. Being a policeman, I very much doubt if he will be in any serious trouble though, as I am yet to see any of them who have murdered members of the public genuinely punished.

Sorry, but to me does not seem like a great loss to humanity, a student running around with a gun

Rain or smog clearing with a hose pipe.

Thailand is slipping very fast into a lawless society... death every day one way or another.

Poverty is biting in as the wealth gap widens, people out of work doing/selling drugs to make money.

University kids graduating with a worthless certificate of education turning to crime immediately because commerce has no place for them.

Tourism on the slip meaning many resort workers will soon be out of work.

Thailand is heading for a slump.

Are you waiting for the extensive report on why the "Policeman" fired four shots into a group of people?

Don't hold your breath.

Who needs fake news...LOS is a daily dose of high stake "believe it or not" excitement (and/or excrement).

it depends, if he believes his (or someone elses) life is in danger then his actions could be justified, reading the OP it seems the police were not the only ones carrying firearms.

TBH it's not easy to work out what exactly was going on from the news report - no surprise there

Cop was upset that his personal buy was light and he was going to have to dip into the evidence to take home his share....so....bang, bang.
