What this poll is saying, is we do not want the army anymore. The last thing in the world the current administration wants, is to raise the living standard for the average person, make life comfortable for foreigners or tourists, and improve the nation on any level. At least with a newly elected, democratic administration, there would be a chance of some of that happening. The army needs to leave now, and the people need to usher these incompetents out to pasture, where they belong.

and what exactly will the thai people do to improve this standard?

My guess is f-all. For example if you have a resteraunt, that caters to tourists or local expats then you should train the staff for basic English and basic western standard table service. For example, after serving the initial order, 5 minutes later ask "do you need anything else". This never happenes. Twenty years of catering to tourists and still absolutely clueless. 

 

Thais expect miracles from thier lucky charms. It's not that simple.

Well I do wonder if there were any questions re where the 'better quality of life' comes from?

 

My guess is that a big % of folks are expecting that it's a handout / it's the government's responsibility.

 

And sad that as a society this attitude has been built and reinforced by many past inputs.

Of course they don't want the army anymore but saying that means jail for some. It is here to stay until some (likely cataclysmic) event, changes the whole playing field. Most people do not realize the scope of military control. Thailand needs an army like I need an electric train set.

What this poll is saying, is we do not want the army anymore. I’ve gotten the idea that many people welcome or are indifferent to the army’s stabilization of the country. They seem admire and identify (for lack of better descriptors) with the strength, power and control the army represents.
Some are just happy the elections are back so they can pocket a little from sitting in on gatherings and bringing a few friends.

That is not at all what I hear from the many Thais I speak with. Perhaps that was the case in the first year or so. After the Bangkok shutdown, alot of people so very relieved to have a semblance of normality back in their lives. But, very soon the army betrayed the trust of the people, and most of us understood what the coup was really about. Power, fortunes, and protecting the elite, the super wealthy, those who are connected, and those in power, and in the army. That is all it has ever been. And it was especially apparent after the rewrite of the constitution in 2017. That was an abomination, and nothing but an enormous power grab. 

 

It has never been about the Thai people, and it has never been about improving the lives of the average pleb. Not now, not ever. The army needs to go, and they need to go now.

On the other, it's far from the whole story; reducing the money--public and private--that magically disappears down the corruption hole would certainly make a difference in living standards *with existing resources*.

 

To say nothing of reducing inefficiencies/redundancies/red tape in key areas while adding in some necessary red tape in the form of tax collection and environmental enforcement standards.  Again, I'm talking about public AND private.

 

That's the sort of thing that makes everyday life better for people.

Yes, it doesn't come for free and many here need to realize that.

 

No, they don't trust the government not to waste large portions of tax money through blatant, ubiquitous corruption and incompetence.  Given their track record, who can blame them?

 

Kind of a chicken or egg problem.

I can also add many people I know and socialise with are hoping Prayuth becomes PM. I'm in Isaan by the way.

Not all Isaan people are rabid red shirts, although I do know quite a few supporters.

Most people seem to see getting on with life and making ends meet more important as opposed to having any interest in idle opinionated farangs trying to push their own agenda on an internet forum.

Simply using the word pleb says a lot about you.  I guess you are one of the 'elites'.

Do you mean, the same as all 'civilised' countries ? If there is a government in this world that can be trusted 100%, i would really like to know which country is that.

if the highest goal is the happiness of the majority of the people, i have the impression to see happier people in so called '3rd world countries' while in the rich, developed, technologically advanced countries, the people struggle the same if not worse.

The was the use of sarcasm. It in no way reflects how I feel about the average man and woman here, whom I have a lot of fondness for, and of which I am one. It is the way I believe the army and the government feel about the average person. There is nothing elite about me. LOL. I am about as common as they get! It's all good. I just believe that commoners deserve some respect and consideration from this elitist government.

Well, you're talking about happiness, which is largely perceptual and difficult to quantify; I was talking about the problem of mistrust as an obstacle to increasing the tax base so that the government would actually have more resources to implement policies that would increase living standards for the majority here.  Which is what people, per the OP, seem to requesting of their government here.

 

Not that I'm claiming even a well-functioning government can be expected to do it all.  You'd need some overall attitude and cultural shifts in the people here as well.
