webfact Posted February 13, 2019 Share Posted February 13, 2019 Cobra Gold officially kicks off in Surin SURIN, 13th February 2019 (NNT) – The 38th iteration of Cobra Gold 2019 officially commenced on Tuesday in Surin province, with more than 8,000 soldiers from eight nations present. Lt Gen Sittipol Nimnuan , director of the Thailand Mine Action Center of the Royal Thai Army, chaired the opening of this year’s Cobra Gold Exercise in the Prasartdistrict of Surin province. Taking place until February 22nd, Cobra Gold got underway with mine destruction exercises in the province’s mission area of mine countermeasures, followed by a humanitarian mine action exercise, humanitarian civic assistance, disaster relief, and counter terrorism. Lt Gen Sittipol said today that clearing the area of unexploded ordnance allows for cultivation of the land as well as prevents the threat of injury and stops explosives from falling into the wrong hands. Cobra Gold is one of the largest cooperative security exercises in the Indo-Pacific region and is an integral part of the US and Thailand’s commitment to strengthening engagement in the region.
