WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Former Massachusetts Governor Bill Weld, the first Republican to challenge President Donald Trump for their party's presidential nomination in 2020, said on Sunday that six more years of Trump's "antics" in the White House would be bad for America.

Weld said the national emergency that Trump declared on Friday to obtain funding for a wall at the U.S.-Mexico border showed his readiness to divide the country.

"I don't think he knows how to act. He thinks he has to humiliate whoever he's dealing with or else he's half a man," Weld told ABC's "This Week" in an interview.

"The emergency declaration is just one example of that. Congress thought they had a deal. He says: 'Oh, you think you have a deal? I'm going to show you a deal. I'm going to show you who's boss,'" he added.

Weld, 73, said on Friday he was pursuing a Republican primary challenge against Trump in 2020.

It would be a long-shot bid as opinion polls show Trump's re-election is overwhelmingly supported by Republican voters, but Weld defended his own candidacy.

"It is part of my thinking to make sure he doesn't repeat, we don't have six more years of the antics," Weld said. "That would be bad for the country."

Other Republicans have flirted with the idea of challenging Trump, including former Ohio Governor John Kasich and former Senator Jeff Flake of Arizona.

Weld ran as the Libertarian Party's vice presidential candidate in 2016 and returned to the Republican Party this year.

He now intends to take aim at Trump policies that have pushed the U.S. budget deficits to nearly $1 trillion a year.

"The president is reckless in spending. They're spending $1 trillion a year. They don't have that. It's going to crush Generation Xers and millennials," he said.

Weld also dismissed his own Republican critics who have accused him of switching allegiances and who say they want Trump to run without a primary challenger in 2020. "I think it's not what the country needs, to put it mildly," he said.

Bill Weld has the right to an opinion, no matter how misguided he is. Record employment rates for minorities, tackling historic trade defecits, a booming economy and hugely increased respect on the world stage. Doesn't sound so bad does it? Mr Weld is lucky in that he will get to tackle his biases and hopefully work through it over the next 6 years. Trump will ace the 2020 election. First the democrats do not have a single serious candidate, and 2nd the media still have not realized Trump is playing them like fools, all this free publicity for nothing. You just can't beat it.

Free publicity is great when you're a novelty act. But when the majority grow tired of it, not so much.

He's only half a man anyway except in body mass, then he's 1.5. He's proven in 2 years that his strangely wired brain is only the equivalent of a half brain. No "genius", Donald. Only in your own eyes. Probably not in the eyes of your offspring either. They're just playing you, same as Kim.

"I'm going to show you who's boss".

Yeap, that's Donald, dealing in bad faith again. Same way that he dealt with (and screwed) thousands of staff, contractors, business associates et al. Winning is all that matters to Donald.

There aren’t too many places doing better financially than the USA. China is not having an easy time. Europe is going nowhere fast.  I hope you British retired expats getting paid in pounds are planning to hedge your money somehow. Brexit isn’t going to be kind to many pensions for those living abroad that are frozen. I don’t think too many other countries are laughing as opposed to crying.

i can’t see how the new green deal is going to raise revenue to pay down the debt when the dems are talking about we can just print another 10, 25, or even 100 trillion dollars. Especially after every rich American in their right mind hides their money off shore to protect themselves against what will become the nuttiest tax regime of all time if the dems should win.

Always bizarre to see Trump supporters claim to be concerned about the debt.

Bill was my Gov. back in the 90's. He ran unsuccessfully for the US senate! Me thinks he's lookin for a job, they usually do when they drop out!

The only real successful Politician to make it from Mass was JFK, the rest failed miserably!

Cant argue with much of the other stuff you may be saying, but more respect? Sorry mate, the world is actually laughing at you.

They aren’t laughing they have a lot of pressure. If they are laughing that’s fine. The six week holidays might be curtailed as Europe sinks deeper into a very big looming recession.

Is China laughing? I guess so if you like a recession.

Can an you explain to me who is laughing when theAmerican economy is the envy ofthe world?

He is very much correct on both accounts.

thirdly dems have not realized the stupidity, which their congress freshmen have exerted towards society like

1. the antisemite ilhan omar with her antisemite twitter remarks raises the question is she unfit for congress ?? to be impeached together with tlaib

2. the most evil action by aocortez costing the new york state 25000 jobs well paid middle class jobs as amazon denounces its headquarter plans. obviously aocortez is not fit for simple economics how much more usd $ 3 billion would generate. aoc same unfit for congress .

There are so many things to look at down this road some are pushing that it is disgusting. I do feel that the socialist/communist/ or the destroyers of western society are not really after Trump but after you and me.... Trump is just in the way.. Why more can not realize that just goes to show how effective their programs really are.. If HRC had become POTUS it would have been all singing and praise as she and her cabal finished cutting down the tree of liberty IMO..
