webfact
Thai police help Japanese business people conned by South Korean swindler Picture: Thai Rath Thai Rath columnist Plueng Payak reported that senior Thai police had helped three Japanese businessmen who were held and swindled by a South Korean gangster. Hwong Jeon Nil (name transliterated from Thai) had his visa revoked after his arrest announced by General Rungrot Saengkham, Pol Lt-Gen Piya Uthayo and immigration chief Lt-Gen Surachate Hakparn. Plueng Payak said that Hwong had met Marina Yamaguchi and her brother Kohei and Kentaro Koga in Japan. He said that he was familiar with Thailand and persuaded them to come to Bangkok and invest via him in stocks and shares. He promised good returns on their investments. When they arrived in October Hwong put them up in a condo in Sukhumvit Soi 13 and took their passports and travel documents to ensure they would not be able to leave. He also took their money. After some time passed and the business people asked about their returns they were met with a variety of excuses. Eventually he said that if they continued to press him about the money he would ensure that the Yakuza in Japan would hurt their families there. They were assaulted. The three were effectively held in the condo before Marina managed to escape and alert the Japanese Embassy as to their plight.
