I am always told and asked if pharmacy or I'll buy.  I buy viagra at the hospital because I don't want fakes.  Some times if a doctor forgets to discuss a prescription I refuse it at the cashier when paying the total bill for physician and drugs - no problem.  You must not have experience with all hospitals.  Probably only post about what you know for sure.  I deal with BDMS.

BDMS?

Bondage

Discipline

Mortifying

Subjugation

Try it.

Then you won't need Viagra

You could buy Sidegra at most pharmacies, a generic produced in Thailand, doubt anybody would fake this, it's cheap already

I don't really understand why i would need a prescription to buy drugs at a stand alone pharmacy. To my understanding everything a stand alone pharmacy has is sold by them without prescription.

Controlled substances are only available at hospital pharmacies and can't be bought somewhere outside.

For which drugs do you need a prescription which can then be used to buy this drug at a stand alone pharmacy?

Bumrungrad also does NOT allow its doctors to give prescriptions for outside purchase of medications. This is a relatively new decision - my Doctor showed me the memo.

I will now see this Doctor at another hospital, where he is allowed to issue prescriptions.

I really dislike buying medicine at hospitals,  (private or government). Why?

One issue is the price, but more importantly;

in a hospital I get a plastic bag with some pills/tablets inside

no information about what the medicine is for

no information about how the medicine works

no information about the chemical composition of the medicine

no information about known and possible side effects

when I buy drugs in a pharmacy I get it in proper packaging with

a rather large information leaflet covering the issues I listed above

my preference is to know what I am eating and why

....

when I say this to physicians in hospitals they understand and agree with what I say

and give me a piece of paper with drug name and dosage

It was said in a post above that in Thailand so called prescriptions serves

no other purpose than being a shopping list. Medicine shops sell whatever they have

if you can spell it out.

That may be so.

But,

if we are talking drugs with narcotic components,

like very heavy duty pain killers for example, then I thought

a proper prescription was needed?

(yes, pharmacies have such drugs, I have asked about this - and they say yes)

re cheap drugs:

My experience, Bangkok, the cheapest place I have found re drugs, by far:

Next to Siriraj hospital, that is where they treat the royal family, it is huge and it is good.

Situated on the western bank of Chao Praya.

A wee bit south of Bangkok Noi canal.

A wee bit south of the Bangkok - Kanchanaburi railway.

To the east of the Arun Amarin road.

From Arun Amarin road along the southern perimeter of Siriraj hospital

and down to the Chao Praya river runs a soi which is packed with

pharmacies - medical supply shops - street food stalls.

The pharmacies have huge stocks and they are very low cost.

If they have these then of course a prescription is needed, i thought that these kind of drugs are only available in hospital pharmacies.

The next time i'm at a pharmacy i will ask them how this works.

The challenge is that Thai doctors do not have prescription sheets and when asked to refuse as it is hospital policy that you have to buy the drugs from them.  The system is kind of wack but it seems that high priced prescriptions i\s the way they make the money for the hospital.

I once was called a bad man by a female physician who refused to give my wife a prescription. She called me a bad man because when she refused I asked her if it was because she would lose her commission on the pills...

She wrote a note in my wife's record blacklisting her and still refused to give the prescription. The hospital gave us a photocopy of the diagnostic so we could get some meds.

About half hour later, while we were driving back home, we got a phone call from the hospital begging us to go back so they could get my wife's permission to remove the blacklist note from the doctor... we didn't go back.

BTW the hospital is Bangkok Rayong. One of the worst hospitals I have ever been to. All they care about is milking their patients... as do all other private hospitals in Thailand for that matter.

Out of curiosity:

What medicine do you need a prescription for, that you can not get outside the hospital without a prescription?

I'm not talking about controlled medicines that are hospital only.

To me, it seems, if a pharmacy has it, they sell it, and never ask about prescription.

Maybe this is grey area in dispensing and so highly prevalent it's hard to tell it isn't supposed to be done?

Once I went to a very expensive hospital in Bangkok, I had all the medicines I needed at home but the doctor said she couldn't let me go without selling me medicine because it was the hospital policy. I ended buying paracetamol for something like 1000 THB ! Now I go to other hospitals, bunch of scammers.
