Let's face it, it isn't the call tp prayers, it's just another excuse to promulgate racism.

And who's going to be the first to qualify as racist by claiming

"It's a religion, so I'm not racist!" - come on grow up!

this is just another page for Facebook to show people how bigoted expats in Thailand can be

No any Thai temple ever wake me up from my sleep because Temples are not located in residential or dense residential areas. Mosques are usually located in dense residential areas so more muslims can attend to prayers 5 times a day and hear the sermon from Imam.

You mean like wat Lamai.

What you mean is the new luxurious falang villas are not built next to the Thai temples.

Now they are building a mosque and the neighborhood falangs are worried about property prices.

That Temple is older than any other farang villas which are built on shady companies and illegally owned by farangs.

Nobody with a right mind would make a home very close to a Temple. You have no idea how mosques are formed in Islamic countries and yet you compare it a few Buddhist/Hindu temples that are next to some homes by coincidence.

I really suggest you to go stay in Krabi for a few nights and see for yourself.

Indeed if you like dogs, live near a temple - or troops of monkeys - then you'll really appreciate the local wildlife.

Unfortunately - Live near a church and the bells wake you up on the morning on a Weekend (especially wedding days). Live near a Buddist Temple and it has loud speakers waking you at daft o'lock in the morning and generally disturbances throughout the day. Live near a mosque you are disturbed by the call to prayer 5 times a day...

Religion is noisy !!! and what for?....  Can we not just tell religion to shut up? !!! if people wish to pray, visit a church or temple... then go - whats the need for incessant repetitive noise ????

More muslims will emigrate to these areas after Mosque and then they'll make another mosque somewhere which will start another muslim community nearby and so on and so forth. Islam is the only religion uses a noisy call to prayer 5 times a day

I wonder what its strong appeal is?

If you want to experience adhan firsthand stay a few days in muslim dominated krabi and you'll understand it fully!

you base that idea on what? THey're already here and that's why they need an improved place of worship - what have you got against Muslims - that isn't racist?

Slightly off topic,

If you can use a recording for your 'call to prayers', could you not just record your prayers in advance, sleep through and just have your mobile phone play your prayers at appropriate times?

Just wondering?

Something about this thread....How to spot a racist.......

Why is it racists spend so much time claiming something isn't racist?

Racism is like alcoholism - you need to admit it before you can tackle it.

It is pretty much impossible to argue for racism, so as not to appear completely out of step everybody else, most racists, like alcoholics, argue that they are NOT racists which is also an untenable position.

In short racists claim that un-racist things are racist and racist things aren’t’ ....

Do any of these sound familiar?

If you can tick any of these, you probably are a racist ...

  1. I’ve got nothing against them…. but ...  [+ apocryphal anecdote]
  2. They come over here.........
  3. Did you hear the one about?……. [insert your minority here]
  4. Odd, quasi-formal vocabulary – e.g. “colored’s” - “racialist”
  5. “it’s PC gone mad!”
  6. Overuse of the third person plural “They”, “them” “their” etc.
  7. They believe in reverse racism – “Some of themare racist too!”
  8. It’s in their culture
  9. Racism is “natural”
  10. “some of my best friends are..... [insert your minority here]

Not true, the first people to inhabit this part of Thailand where the Hainanese who partially settled here during tropical storms. Hence, Samui is just another saying for "Safe Haven". This island has pretty much remained empty up until the 1800s when Thai people themselves built up and inhabited the area. Nathon was the first town to be built followed by Mea Nam, and the first Buddhist temples were built there as well. Historically, Buddhism has been the official religion in Koh Samui.

Islam wasn't even noticeable in SE Asia up until 1970s after the islamic revolution in Iran and the spread of wahabbism from Saudi Arabia. Afghanistan was equally developed western society until islamists destroyed it and followed through all the way into Indonesia.

Koh Samui has been predominately Thai, and the small muslim community are local fishermen from southern thailand, mostly from Pattani region who where employed by fishing companies when the tourist boom started after the 1990s.

According to the Marine Department in Nathon – the information sign on their building on the new pier – the first inhabitants on Samui were Malays, dating all way back to the Stone Age. Chinese merchants started to arrive as long back as 1,500 to 2,000 years ago.

The first map with Samui is Chinese and dated 1687. At the end of the Ayutthaya era, around 1700, the Hainans settled on Samui, and they are the reason for the Hainan temples in for example Nathon and Mae Nam. "Sa mui" is Hainan language pronunciation for "safe harbor".

"Muslim Village", or Hua Thanon, dates some 130 years back (now, so around 1890-1900), founded by Malay immigrants. At 2008 there were about 600 people in the muslim community. (Source: "The Muslim village of Hua Thanon - May 11th, 2008")

Problem is, the stone age ended somewhat 8000 years BC and islam didn't exist up until 600 AD. The Malays you are referring to where Han Chinese which as I mentioned before were the first people to explore this part of Asia. I'm not so sure about the history of Hua Thanon since Maret, Lamai wasn't even established up until 1973 after the route from Chaweng to Lamai was completed.

It's a mystery place indeed, and I can't verify if the source you linked is 100% correct due to the poor language and such a short text with a minuscule historical evidence. The mosque in Hua Thanon looks fairly new to be honest.

No it's not, it's just a bunch of people expressing their freedom of speech. If you are not interested in the subject, then don't get involved. Or you can get involved in the discussion, but stay on topic and don't act like a red headed white feminist.

allahu akbar...God is Great...is a harmless Muslim phrase...it is when they shout jihad...that you need to be concerned...

At 4 am Alluah Akbar screamed out it is a call to arms. It's what they shout at every murder bombing. In London, Manchester, Sri Lanka's etc. There is an online manual about how to stop mosque development for use in the USA and Europe. Mosques drive property prices down in Kuwait and Saudi and are an anti social intimidating confrontation in Afghanistan, Libya, Tunisia, Libya etc. Get out now when you can. A mosque is not a place of worship rather it is a front lane against the enemy. In Norway the atheist society set up a loud speaker to enforce their rights. They shouted through amplifiers: ' God is not great, there is no God there is no prophet.'

There were no roads on Koh Samui before that time, could take a day get from one end of the island to the other over land, but you could sail in a boat. Houses were sometimes build with all materials supplied by boat; also the original house on the land I bought.

Lamai is an old Hainan settlement, one of the old Chinese-Hainan families that owns The Pavillion resort at entrance to Lamai Beach, are collecting stuff for a museum. Unfortunately there are not that much detailed material available on the Internet, but there are in print, some of the colorful free Samui-magazines have over the years published good detailed information, from where I got part of my knowledge about the island's history.

And about your "Stone Age" comment, the muslim settlements are of course later than Malays and Hinanese arrivals, but not as late as the 1970'ies, rather about 100 years earlier. Many fisherman tribes, also called "Sea Gypsies", are muslims, who mainly settled on the west coast of Thailand, including Krabi and Phuket areas. If I remember right, the sea-tribes are also mentioned on the poster by Hin Ta Hin Yai, where the story about the stones are explained (don't have time to search my photo archive now, for a picture with the text).

A good source for the later history on Internet can be found here.

You make the classic Occido-centric mistake of assuming that settlement requires roads......until the advent of tourism settlement was in the vast majority by fishing communities who relied on boats for transport. They were also largely Muslim as in large parts of Southern Thailand.

As a side note, settlement by boat and river is the way that most of Thailand was also settled

Your thinking on the matter is limited and archaic.

Sadly Islamophobia is a form of racism....... as said racists spend a lot of time denying they are racists.

"Islamophobia is rooted in racism and is a type of racism that targets expressions of Muslimness or perceived Muslimness." - All Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on British Muslims.

Similar definitions in most countries in North America , Europe and Australasia.

Remember, there is stupid, damned stupid and racist."
