Jonathan Fairfield
Buried alive! Man digging drainage ditch dies in front of wife and child Image: Sanook A Thai man digging a drainage ditch in Thailand's north east died after he was buried under a ton of earth in front of his family. Soke Kam police in Seka district of Bung Kan province found that 53 year old Anan was already dead. He had a broken neck. His younger brother Amnat, 51, said that Anan had been digging a drainage ditch with the help of his wife Noosin, 50, and their daughter over the last two months. It was a big job as they wanted to create a large enough channel to avoid having to use a pump to drain water from a reservoir. He was using a spade and filling a hod with earth that he would hand to his wife who would then pass it on to their daughter to toss aside. But on Tuesday afternoon the three meter sides to the ditch gave way burying his brother and almost doing the same to his wife. When the family had regained their composure they frantically used a spade to try and reach Anan but it proved futile. They got the younger brother who helped to dig him out but by then it was too late. Odysseus123
Sad story...and that is a hell of a trench. My grandfather was buried alive after a shell hit his dugout in 1918.He was the only one left alive of the 5 occupants when they frantically dug them out after 5 minutes. Beatriz
That's too deep to be digging without shoring. Shoring will cost money and more time so I guess they just take the risk. Some farmers died because of methane gas, they dug quite deed the gas got to them and they died. Farmers in Thailand don't know about these sort of things and precautions to be taken?
