Rimmer Posted March 8, 2019 Share Posted March 8, 2019 Pattaya locals implored not to give cash to beggars PATTAYA:--Pattaya residents were urged not to give money to beggars, saying the seemingly charitable act only contributes to human trafficking, child abuse and more beggars. Mayuree Damnernpol, director of the Chonburi Protection Center for the Destitute, spoke to residents of the Soi Khopai Community Feb. 28, along with Pattaya Social Development Director Teeraporn Srichan Instead of giving money, people should call the Department of Social Development and Welfare at hotline 1300 or the police, Mayuree said. In addition, street performers and buskers often are vagrants or victims of human trafficking. Authorities should be alerted and they will check if the performer is registered to perform publicly. If not, they will be taken to the destitute center or other shelters pending investigation. Mayuree said anyone spotted dropping off beggars or performers should be reported, as they may be involved with human trafficking. She started off as a child toddler performer seemingly being 'exploited' by a Thai man, using a cheap plastic chair. as a prop. connda Posted March 9, 2019 Share Posted March 9, 2019 When I use to live in Chiang Mai I lived in the Thai section of town. I knew a lot of people. The beggars were patently from the 'outside'. They didn't live locally. Where there poor people locally? Yep. Crazy people? Yep. But they didn't beg on the streets. One way or another, the community worked to care for them. It's pretty well common knowledge that the trucked-in 'beggars' are mafia shills. Those who wish to support the mafia - well, feel free to donate. Ulic Posted March 9, 2019 Share Posted March 9, 2019 The police could do their job and get the beggars off the street but I doubt that will happen as there is no money to be made from it. As for locals giving, I doubt it happens, locals know it is a scam. Tourists, on the other hand, do not. A baht given to the beggars is a baht less that will be spent on booze and the like, so the police should do their job so the bars can keep filling those police envelopes. 473geo Posted March 9, 2019 Share Posted March 9, 2019 By all means work to remove the mafia groups professional beggars, advice to be selective is good, and allows for personal choice, but let us not remove the compassion for a human being that is suffering through lack of a few baht, or indeed the street entertainers who are not 'in your face' beggars and are rewarded for their skills.
