Having said that I don't think they would ever refuse treatment but you would get billed for it if you just left the hospital without giving up proof to the appropriate authorities, who knows. Hospitals administrations have a duty now to check, and check carefully, that all patients are entitled to free treatment or not. So they'll want ID, NHI number, GP's name and address, residence address. From what I've heard some hospitals are more keen than others and some don't put much effort into it. Again, from what I remember, if you are going back as a resident you must also inform HMRC that you have returned and are intending to stay and so will become resident for tax purposes. The wouldn't refuse any emergency treatment, life saving. But on-going treatment needed would, if they follow the rules, be charged to you at a highly marked up cost. As an expat you are treated as any other foreigner.

Popular Post AlexRich
The type of cancer that Kev has is not easily curable, with life expectancy seriously diminished. I’m not an avid watcher of Kevs channel but he comes across as a decent bloke. His channel provides some entertainment and some decent information for anyone looking to settle in Thailand. If someone chooses to subscribe, give him a thumbs up, or throw a few quid his way it is up to them, and is simply a way of expressing gratitude. With You Tube bloggers you get to watch essentially for free, or choose not to watch if you don’t like it. He’s not a beggar, just a guy providing a service ... it takes work to film, edit, publish. it’s a sad indictment of the human race that this news is met by the “no sympathy” brigade on Thai Visa. A bit of human decency wouldn’t go amiss on here sometimes. I wouldn’t wish that illness on anyone, friend or foe. 6

Not Thai bashing at all. Thailand is a beautiful place (not bkk). I was referring to so many posts from ex pats on here saying how expensive it is now. How they have no medical insurance as its expensive. Now we have some prat who seems to live the life of chasing the 'good' life and telling the whole world how he is doing every day...who really cares...and then posts video of him in a hospital saying he has cancer and how much it costs. Then his 'mate' does a gofund for him so he can carry on with his 'treatment'. The rules have tighten up re NHS and you have to be registered with a Dr in the UK. But if he came back just register with a dr and he will be treated. Im sure at his age he has a record with paying NI contributions with a NHS number. He goes on that he was waiting till he was 60 to get insurance. What crap is that. Been said many times here in the forums...Cant afford to live there dont live there. 3

RickoMortis
If I was in Kevs position would of got a flight home to the UK. All treatment would be free and he has been a tax payer in the UK so no problems. Kev would of saved over a million baht but it's his own wish to pay for his treatment in Thailand where they will milk him of every baht they can. Kevs not short of money and think he still has his scrap yard in the UK he owns. Its Kevs life so as they say in Thailand UP TO YOU. I wish Kev all the best with his health issue and hope now he will stop smoking.

If you are out of the country for more than 2 years you lose any entitlement, unless you were overseas working for a British company. I have heard of a generous interpretation of that last point being made. I have heard of generous interpretations being made by other agencies, then a return being made to NHS. Mostly, though it's simple. You have been out of UK for 2 or more years. The NHS show you the door. You aren't and haven't been permanently resident. I fail to see what is so hard to understand, but think that most people just run their lives around the mythologies perpetrated say here. That is very dangerous when it come's to your health. Research it. I have been out of the UK for much more than 2 years. I get my quarterly repeat prescription, from my GP, posted out to me. I return once per year for my annual check up. What the NHS doesn't know doesn't hurt them. If I was in Burt's shoes, I'd be on the next plane back to the UK.

Kev would have to return and be settled for at least six months before that situation changed as far as the authorities are concerned. In six months his cancer could have spread. If he goes private in the UK he cannot transfer to the NHS later. This point has been made several times, but it is not well understood.
