Kenchamp
20k to pay off the real criminals? Shocking how this extortion continues. Don't know if the guy stole or picked up the phone or not but it seems as soon as an opportunity arises, the squeeze is applied.

Aussieroaming
Agree the bloke is a <deleted> for stealing a phone, but where are the British Embassy staff calling BS on their national being held in jail on a petty theft charge until bail and court hearings. What a joke in a country where bigger crimes happen daily and are dealt with via a fine.

Tchooptip
We all have the right not to agree with everyone, so I do not wish to offend you✋, because I respect the opinions different from mine. So my opinion right or wrong is different, in that I would see all the phone thieves a few days behind bars. It's too easy, it's a hypocrite theft that threatens everyone, the brave people spend their hard-earned money to buy an expensive phone, with a lot of personal information, notes, important phone numbers, and an <deleted> passing buy without seeming anything put the phone in his pocket, too easy! And secondly, unlike you, I do not see any petty theft. Once a thief, always a thief....because in my book the honest people never ever steal, and so those who are caught nothing says that it's the first time, and probably not. Embassy staff don’t need to get involved in all criminal actions of their citizens in foreign countries or they would need thousands of more employees all around the world. I know all humans make mistakes and some steal and regret it and don’t do it again. No one is perfect. That is why you have warnings, fines and first time probation etc. The people who use stereotypes like “once a thief always a thief” use these phrases to appear morally superior which serves no useful purpose. IMO be careful trusting those people that lacks empathy or feel the need to shout their moral values. All humans have fallen short of moral perfection and the man that lives a good life does. It need to judge others or proclaim his morality. Hope this man suffers some consequences and regrets his actions and tries to never do it again. Raising 20,000 pounds from strangers online or blaming others including Thai police is IMO not what this young man needs. Peace

Do you know how the legal system can work in Thailand, either officially or unofficially? By the way, i am not proclaiming the guys innocence and if he stole the phone, then he deserves punishment. A couple of days in the cells and 20k (baht) fine would have been plenty.

AlexRich
He's been accused of stealing a mobile phone. He has proclaimed his innocence. There has been no trial as yet. The reason he has raised so much cash is that many people who know him well, i.e. people who do not post on Thai Visa, do not believe that he is guilty. Perhaps better not to label him as a thief until that has been proved beyond a reasonable doubt in a court?
