Daily News continued their campaign to report daily on the carnage on the Thai roads. 

 

They are trying to raise awareness and improve driving on what are some of the most dangerous roads in the world. 

 

 

Yesterday 52 people were killed. It was 74 on Monday, the worst day this month.

 

The figures always come with a disclaimer that they are unofficial and expected to rise when deaths at hospitals are added to the already grim "at the scene" figures. 

 

 

Since the start of the year 3,175 people have perished. 

 

Daily News'  focus in the latest report was on motorcycles that are said to make up 70% of fatalities. 

 

One guy in Sakon Nakorn told his friends that he was OK to ride home despite being drunk. 

 

 

He hit the central reservation on the Sakon Nakorn to Na Kae road and came off dying instantly. He was not wearing a helmet. 

 

CCTV in another location showed a rider come off as a truck was turning left. It was not reported if this person survived or not. 

 

Thaivisa notes that the truck may not have been indicating but experienced riders should be well aware of the peril of undertaking slowing vehicles in this manner.

It can't be fixed.  All it takes is a drive anywhere in Thailand and you'll see the most idiotic driving time after time.  It won't change no matter what the government says, no matter what they show on TV.

In many of the crashes it is simply a case of carelessness, recklessness, or a complete lack of any driving skill or road awareness altogether.

 

The cops' MO is never about being proactive, as it is likely going to be confrontational and will be simply too much of an effort for them to be bothered with

Its becoming hard not to arrive at the conclusion that these people are not best suited to driving motor vehicles .. They should return to olde times and just ride Buffalo's around for the sake of self preservation of future gen's if nothing else the way they are going here ..

The second video has it all: motorbike on wrong side of road, trying to cross; impatient truck driver notices that leading truck is indicating so instead of waiting 5 secs decides to overtake; after accident the pick up truck driver just continues on with cutting between the slow left-lane truck and the crashed motorbike. So three morons in the video. One paid with his life.

Is anyone surprised by this?

Where I live they have a pretty busy and dangerous intersection with cars doing u-turns into fast moving traffic. To their credit, they recently installed traffic lights.

But the next day someone got rear ended while waiting for the lights to change, so they switched the traffic lights off again.

Like the saying goes, there are old bikers and there are bold bikers. There aren't too many old, bold bikers though. Stupid ones don't last long either, as is evidenced by many of these clips.

In that case they should hire foreign experts to train the Thai police....how many people have to die first? Soon the rest of the world will watch these video's and think the Thai must be lacking braincells.

the sad thing is there are old Thais on scooters just trying to stay out of the way of all the new 150 kph pickup trucks flying through their village. oil and water don't mix.

Apart from the upcoming election, this is the biggest issue in Thailand that needs properly addressing. It is a truly embarrassing statistic, yet nothing has been put in place to begin change. It'll take decades, but things need to be slowly implemented.

The numbers never add up when it comes to this topic. From previous reports that Thailand is number 1 when it comes to road death it was 24000 per year. We are 10 weeks in which should mean we have 4600 by now, or higher given we had New Years recently. 

 

But it this is 30% lower than where we should be. Either there had been a major improvement in road deaths or more likely that total number per year is bunk.

I believe the government allows this style of dying on the roads to be population control.  that's the only theory which makes any sense for the continuation of horrible vehicular operation.

 

Thais don't drive.  they aim.  they point.  they don't drive because driving requires thinking and thinking is illegal in the Kingdom.

They can use simulators to let ALL THAI re-do a driving exam....There's no way they can cheat a simulator....

 

Then they do the same for the police, let them work on simulators for some weeks to learn what is allowed and what not.

 

Thailand will soon be the joke of the world if this continues.

If ten per cent of this number had been killed in a single incident such as a "terrorist attack" there would be a national outcry and demands that something be done. 

 

This is something that is not confined to Thailand. How many people know that in Northern Ireland during the "Troubles" there were more people killed on the roads than in terrorist incidents? 

 

It's just not sensational enough.

This is 'reported dead at the scene' so those that arrive at hospital and die or die on the way aren't counted thus reducing the numbers.

The number of deaths resulting from the accident, but occurring after the ambulance doors have closed, are not added to the figures that are confusing you.

 

the annual total giving 24,000 deaths a year, is authored by an international observer, at years end, when all the endings are done

 

the lower number is governmental deception, to keep the real truth from the public, so they don’t drive scared.

haha like that is ever going to happen.  They are far too arrogant to think that westerners can help.  Same for education, civil engineering, aviation, shipping, you name it, they think they know best.

I'm quite surprised at this low figure as I usually see people riding on the wrong side of the super highway, running red lights quite long after they have changed and turning onto busy roads without a care in the world, riding at night with no lights and the list goes on and on and on.

Totally agree! Any kind of improvement requires a totally different way of thinking, by police, government and drivers.

I came home this morning from Bangkok.Since the governmet cleared(cleaned)up the mess in Bangkok concerning minibuses it is now much more difficult to get around in Bangkok.

Now coming from bts station Mo chit you have to take a bus to the new mini bus station or take a motorbike taxi.

The horror!This rider went the first two km. in against traffic,weaving in and out traffic.We nearly had tlee accidents and all of them would have been his fault.After he did decide to drive the right way he kept taking chances and dodging traffic.

Did we pass BIB'S? yes we did.

60 baht was the cost,so that is the value of my life.I do ot know about if he values his life,probably not.
