New Zealand police hunt 'active shooter' after gunman opens fire at mosque

He was obviously well prepared. Started with a shotgun and transited to a semi-auto rifle with what seemed like an extended magazine given the number of rounds he put down before a mag change.

Apparently an Aussie right-winger who had posted a manifesto previously - he clearly had an agenda.

not something one would expect to see in NZ- asad day for all.

I'm shocked that the shooter filmed it and even more shocked that someone has put it on view for the general public!

Muslims all over the world are going to be seeking revenge for this vile atrocity and who can blame them.

Yogi do you remember posting this or not?

Revenge is an acceptable motive according to you.

Are you for real!

You might be shocked if it was your innocent friends and family being murdered in cold blood for no reason and then having their slaughter put on the internet for all to see.

I bet you'd be singing a different tune then nor would you be saying 'welcome to social media'

Welcome to social media. There is nothing you or I can do about..its the real world. Trying to put me on a guilt trip is ridiculous..grow up or leave the internet world and go read books.

Forty dead, 20 seriously wounded in New Zealand mosque shootings

WELLINGTON (Reuters) - Forty people were killed and more than 20 seriously wounded in shootings at two mosques in New Zealand on Friday, in what Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said was a terrorist attack.

The massacre by at least one gunman during Friday prayers in the city of Christchurch is the country's worst ever mass shooting and was condemned throughout Asia.

"We believe that 40 people have lost their lives in this act of extreme violence," Ardern said.

"It is clear that this can now only be described as a terrorist attack."

Ardern said New Zealand had been placed on its highest security threat level. She said four people in police custody held extremist views, but had not been on any police watchlists.

Video footage widely circulated on social media, apparently taken by a gunman and posted online live as the attack unfolded, showed him driving to one mosque, entering it and shooting randomly at people inside.

Worshippers, possibly dead or wounded, lay huddled on the floor of the mosque, the video showed. Reuters was unable to confirm the authenticity of the footage.

One man who said he was at the Al Noor mosque told media the gunman was white, blond and wearing a helmet and a bulletproof vest. The man burst into the mosque as worshippers were kneeling for prayers.

"He had a big gun ... he came and started shooting everyone in the mosque, everywhere," said the man, Ahmad Al-Mahmoud. He said he and others escaped by breaking through a glass door.

Radio New Zealand quoted a witness inside the mosque saying he heard shots fired and at least four people were lying on the ground and "there was blood everywhere".

Ardern said 30 people were killed at the Al Noor mosque, the city's main mosque, and another 10 at a mosque in the suburb of Linwood.

"This is one of New Zealand's darkest days," she said.

New Zealand's Police Commissioner Mike Bush said four people - three men and a woman - had been taken into custody.

Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison said one of the men in custody was Australian.

Police said IEDs, improvised explosive devices, were found with a vehicle they stopped.

The online video footage, which appeared to have been captured on a camera strapped to the gunman's head, showed red petrol canisters in the back of his car, along with weapons.

All mosques in New Zealand had been asked to shut their doors, police said.

The Bangladesh cricket team was arriving for Friday prayers when the shooting occurred but all members were safe, a team coach told Reuters.

Political and Islamic leaders across Asia expressed their disgust at the deadly shooting.

"Indonesia strongly condemns this shooting act, especially at a place of worship while a Friday prayer was ongoing," Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi said in a statement.

Would you care to indicate where I've said or even insinuated that?

The desire for revenge forments in all races and religions, it's an integral part of human nature.

The desire for revenge is NOT innate in all humans, thank goodness

"In keeping with other media and the NZ authorities, video link made by the shooters has been removed."

Above is a quote from a previous post. Apparently not all that appears on social media is as acceptable as you seem to suggest.

Its obscene footage. It's a live action snuff film. Banned everywhere human sensibilities reside.

My thoughts are with families of those killed and injured.

I trust that the NZ government has rallied to bring in counsellors for those both directly and indirectly affected by this gross act.

The people of Christchurch will be reeling under this gross act.

NZ has a reputation for accepting those who are seeking asylum and welcoming them.

A dark day in NZ history.

That is pretty gruesome, who said that white terrorists are not a problem. The guy keeps reloading and shooting people. Guys like this do deserve the death penalty. I am against it in general but with evidence like this.

You are either for or against the death penalty.

Viewing the live footage reminded of the video game DOOM.   Stroll into a building with a high-powered weapon.   Slaughter as many as you can.   Replace magazine.   Go to another room.  Continue the slaughter.   Very  nonchalant.   It's only a game.

How very distressing for the innocent victims.

Hate begets hate, just surprised this has not happened before given the state of the world we live in. Expect we will get the usual candles and platitudes about staying strong as usual without looking at the causes for this type of atrocity. There will of course be revenge attacks at some point.

The shooter guy stated that he carried out the killings due to revenge for Muslim terror attacks against Westerners .

So............................will you not be blaming the shooter guy ?

The murderer is a right wing nut job, apparently motivated by hatred of those seeking refuge from war and terror.

My thought too.

How Hollywood and computer games pump out this kind of voilence haunts me. Sure , you and me understand it's a fantasy movie, but there are those affected in a deeper psycho logical way. That debate can be left to a seperate thread though.

It's our world now.

Condolences to the families affected.

No doubt. But my impression was that he looked like someone who'd spent a few thousand hours training with one of these:

Unfortunatly so many of those "seeking refuge from war and terror" are just either economic migrants or terrorists bringing their hate for the west with them, and please do not for a moment think i agree with what he did .

Terrorist atrocities will always occur until politicians realise that different peoples can not be made to integrate nor live together in harmony. And act upon that realisation.

There has been ample evidence if not absolute proof in recent years that extremists will often come out of the woodwork and commit unspeakable horrors.

And I am as aware as I'm sure you are as to what the common denominator is.

Yes I saw the live stream, so calm and got back in his car and just drove away as if it was nothing. Sickening

The common denominator is always money, though most choose to look at in other terms.

Completely disagree with your assessment of the motivations of those fleeing war, terror or seeking a better life.

I really don’t care why someone leaves their country, done it all my life, no reason to hate those doing so.
