(Reuters) - Police have a 24-year-old suspect in custody in the slaying of reputed Mafia boss Francesco "Franky Boy" Cali in New York City, authorities said on Saturday.

The 53-year-old Cali, who was shot to death on Wednesday outside his Staten Island home, was allegedly the head of the Gambino family, one of the five Italian-American Mafia families that have historically dominated organised crime in New York and New Jersey.

Police apprehended Anthony Comello in New Jersey on Saturday and expect to charge him with murdering Cali, the New York Police Department's Chief of Detectives Dermot Shea told a news conference.

"This is far from over. We are at the beginning stages of this investigation," Shea said.

Surveillance video of the killing showed a man, allegedly Comello, crash his car into Cali's parked SUV, drawing Cali outside in what might have been a ploy to lure him out of the house, Shea said.

ABC News reported that the two men spoke and shook hands before the suspect pulled out a gun. The suspect shot Cali as many as 10 times, Shea said.

Shea declined to say if Comello had a criminal record, but said he had "crossed paths" with the NYPD. Comello's truck was issued a parking summons in Staten Island on the day of Cali's murder, Shea said.

Police are still investigating the motive behind Cali's murder, he said, including whether it might have been a domestic altercation or a mob-related killing.

Charges against members of Mafia operations, including Gambino family operatives, have included murder, loan sharking, gambling and illegal drug distribution, Reuters has reported.

What a dumb clown of a hit man lol

Cant understand why you think he is "a dumb clown" just becasue he got arrested. Assuming he is the one who whacked him, its not the first time a hitter has been popped. Remember how Vincent Gigante got arrested for the hit on Frank Costello. He later became boss.

The mafia is forever. The dude made his bones, the only issue is whether he will get whacked sooner or later. Cali was Sicilian so maybe we are going to have another Zip War.

He's a dumb clown because he murdered Cali in full view of the camera. As for making his bones, it's not even clear yet whether this was a sanctioned hit.

As for the mafia being forever, in NY it's a tiny shadow of what it once was. It's been chased from the ports, from waste disposal, and from the Unions. As well as being outmuscled by gangsters such as the Albanians and cartels from south of the border. Don Corleone is long gone. Get used to it.

And how long did it take them to nail Gigante for that murder?

It's hard to believe this was a sanctioned hit. Very clumsy and the fact they have a suspect already also suggests it is not a sanctioned hit.

And ....

the suspect pulled out a gun and began shooting

When Cali tried to take cover behind his car, the pickup truck drove into it and “rocked” it significantly,

I recall when Joe Gallo got whacked in a crowded restaurant in NYC's Little Italy at dinner time.  Pretty damned bold!

What I just found out recently is that Jerry Orbach, aka Lenny Briscoe on the old "Law and Order" series, was one of the last people who spoke with him.  My guess is Orbach owed him $$ and met to pay off a debt: Orbach was starring in his first Broadway hit (er, "hit show" that is) at the time, so maybe he finally had decent money in his pocket.  Either that or they just met up for cocktails before showtime (Orbach's missus was with them), they could have been childhood pals.

Suspect in mob boss hit flashes pro-Trump slogans on hand

While waiting for a court hearing to begin in Toms River, New Jersey, in which he agreed to be extradited to New York, Comello held up his left hand.

On it were scrawled pro-Trump slogans including "MAGA Forever," an abbreviation of Trump's campaign slogan "Make America Great Again." It also read "United We Stand MAGA" and "Patriots In Charge"; In the center of his palm he had drawn a large circle.
