Semi-automatics have been around for over 100 years, but all the sudden they're the problem. Many have complained that it's all being rushed too much- oral submissions are being severely restricted. All points to certain people wanting to use the nation's outrage to get an agenda through. If semi autos are bad news, they'll still be bad news after a longer process and can be banned then. This haste is unseemly and can only lead to bad legislation and unintended consequences. I gave up my gun license long ago, so I'm not in the discussion for personal reasons, but I don't like the haste that is on display, when more discussion is required. The politicians, IMO, are indulging in their favourite activity of finding more things to criminalise the citizens with, perhaps because they think they'll get more money from fines to pursue their agenda. I have more chance of being beaten to death by some gang prospect than of being killed in a massacre using a semi auto, yet the gangs are in no danger of being eliminated. I have way more chance of dying in a car being driven by some tailgating moron on NZ roads than of being killed by a semi auto rifle, yet the police do zero about tailgaters. Etc. Being realistic, I could start up a fishery with the number of red herrings available on TV. When I've been in NZ, I've found vehicle drivers are very polite - much more so than Melbourne or Thailand. However, that has nothing to do with semi-automatics. You seem to have ignored my statement that I have more chance of being killed on the roads in NZ than by a semi auto weapon. However, to hear them going on, it's like there are hundreds if not thousands of crazed semi auto wielding fanatics out there looking to kill as many of us as they possibly can. Somewhat OTT, IMO. Consider visibility. If you get killed in a bar brawl or a road accident, the only media coverage you will get is a short paragraph or maybe an obituary. Of those, the majority is gang violence In the US, there are around 1,000,000 cases per year of a gun being used in self defense.
