Korat farmers warned against growing second rice crop

The Nakhon Ratchasima-based 8th Royal Irrigation Office on Thursday warned farmers against growing a second rice crop, saying water levels in five dams in the province have fallen below half of their capacity.

 

Kiartisak Nukaew, director of the office, said the combined volume in the five dams had fallen to 469 million cubic metres, which was 47 per cent of the combined capacity of 1 billion cubic metres.

 

He said the Lam Takong Dam in Si Khiew district now has 199 million cubic metres or 63.3 per cent of its 314 million cubic metre capacity.

 

The Upper Mool Dam in Khon Buri district now has 55.7 million cubic metres, which was 39.5 per cent of its capacity oif 141 million cubic metres.

 

The Lam Sae dam in Khon Buri now has 127 million cubic metres or about 46 per cent of its capacity of 275 million cubic metres.

 

The Lam Phraploen dam in Pak Thong Chai district has seen the water volume drop to 49 million cubic metres, 31.8 per cent of its capacciy of 155 million cubic metres.

 

Kiartisak said the Lam Nang Rong dam in Soeng Sang district now has 37.5 million cubic metres, which was 30.8 per cent of its capaccity of 121.4 million cubic metres.

 

He said the office could supply enough tap water but not enough for farmers to grow another rice crop.

If the rice farmers took out rice insurance offered by the government for the 2019 season (with the government subsidizing 51 baht and farmers required to pay 34 baht per rai of farmland) that covers drought, why care?
