webfact Posted March 22, 2019 Share Posted March 22, 2019 Video: Electioneering pick-up in smash at Phrae intersection Picture: Daily News CCTV footage from Phrae in Thailand's north showed a pick-up out canvassing for votes smashed to pieces in a collision at a T-junction. The Toyota was trying to get people to vote for candidate number 8, Rop Thungkham of the Palang Thong Thin Thai Party (PTTT). Khun Rop was not in the vehicle at the time. It was driven by Narin Thinjombadin who suffered head trauma. On the road and severely injured were two other unnamed people. The driver of a Bangkok registered Isuzu pick-up that collided with them - Natthakorn Wongkham, 36 from Lamphun - was only slightly hurt. Long district police said the electioneering pick-up was on its way back to Phrae when it developed a mechanical fault causing it to break down in the middle of the intersection. The CCTV showed it slow down unexpectedly. Thailand goes to the polls on Sunday. Thaivisa notes that no party is campaigning on a platform of doing something about the carnage on Thailand's roads that has seen it named as one of the most dangerous places in the world to drive. Changing down perhaps after realising that pulling away in 2nd or 3rd gear was not going to get him out of the danger zone sufficiently quickly. Of course a driver capable to handle a gearbox wouldn't have stopped halfway. Doing a such a tight maneuver you'd better not try to change gear halfway crossing the path. They are just not capable to get their .... off the spot. Same creeping/shaking like at the lights. My recipe: automatic EDIT: or did he simply stall the engine? But typically, they both estimated that they could proceed and carry on with the split-second near-miss which is normal here. They were wrong. If each driver figures that they have only a 1 in 10 chance of a bad outcome it's worth the gamble. Helluva lot better than slowing down and losing precious seconds in the journey.
