Most of my Thai friends, both men and women make frequent trips to various temples and it usually involves a few hours or less. However once in awhile they go for multi day trips to a temple. My question is: Are these multiday trips a real religious experience or just an excuse to disappear for a few days for whatever reason? Friends have told me on occasion that their Girl Friends are unavailable for a few days as they have gone to the temple. What pops up in my mind is that it really is an almost perfect excuse for a "time out" in a relationship. 1. Who can argue about her going to a temple? 2. No phones allowed so no worries about receiving unwanted calls. 3. No visitors so no checking up on them. 4. Since there are no phones allowed they don't have any pictures to share when back to their normal lives. 5. The desired temple can be in a remote location to further lessen the chance of being checked up on. Recently a GF of mine began telling me several weeks in advance that she had to go with her mother to a remote temple for several days and was it OK? As time got closer her mother got sick and I questioned whether or not she was able to go? She said it was very important to her mother to go even if sick. Yeah Right! After a little investigation she admitted that She was really going on a 4 day trip to another country. But by Herself of course! Haha. So has the "Temple excuse" been used on you or anyone you know? FYI Genuine Temple trips do happen my wife likes me to take her and some family to Temples now and again, a days drive away some of them, first is wife gets me guesthouse near bar. They then go to listen to a certain Monk who has got a reputation that's spread for whatever it is he has become famous for, either about telling fortunes, giving lottery numbers or issuing medicine made in the Temple. All are women and they will wear white for the time being. They can use their phone when not in sessions. You can ask her to call you when she can,but if you do not trust her i would use those few days to disappear. What is the use of staying if you have doubts about her? I really don't have doubts about her? She is already in the "if her mouth is moving she is probably lying" category. Why do I keep her around? She is teaching me a lot about how women here use men and of course the extra special skills she uses as part of that! Did I mention that she is pretty darn pleasant to be around! They’re basically freelancers and they get paid about 20-30k baht to spend a night at private parties and casinos on nearby countries or islands for instance. Yeah I know at least two of them who have forgein boyfriends and they don’t tell their boyfriends when they go in these holidays. One used to live on same build as me. A place with many expats. Met her at a private party in an island when she was hired through somene I know. Number 6 Posted March 24, 2019 Share Posted March 24, 2019 Buddhist people will visit their local temple to make merit, ask forgiveness, listen to sermon from visiting monk, ordinations and just to help out. They often collect money for a temple, perhaps in their home town. Larger temples might host some meditation, sermons or both. Sort of like Catholic retreats.
