True - it's noteworthy that the old comedies like Dad's Army and It Aint Half Hot Mum had plenty of effeminate and racial stereotypes, but no obese characters. It was an uncommon sight a few decades ago in both Asia and the West.

Erm, Captain Mainwaring wasn't exactly a stick insect.

I'm surprised they have passed up the opportunity to be a Maj-Gen by Friday ????

That's the police, not the army, or maybe both, they sure love their nice uniforms, ranks and ribbons

here in Thailand.????

Wrong, go read a history book. During the wars with Burma, Thailand did not even exist. It was called Ayutthaya that time.

During WWII, Thailand granted the japanese army "free passage" from east to west to fight the britts. They did not surrender, ...

In 1942 Thailand declared war on Britain and the United States, Thailand being allies of Japan.

A very good post.

My stepson is going to 'pick' tomorrow. Already has a good job, hard working young man. But I fear that if he 'gets army' his current position will be finished in his absence.

Whole damn thing's a waste of time, & money.

Totally agree, many young couples who have one child struggle as the female has to fend for herself, many Lose good jobs suffer a break down of their relationship and many go AWAL.

In spite of The Sun's main motivation being a saucy story involving ladyboys and some pictures of man boobs, they're doing a good job in highlighting Thailand's ridiculously outdated conscription rules. There hasn't been a ladyboy in the British army since Gloria in "It Ain't Half Hot Mum".

Not quite correct ...

Transgender people and military service

Not all armed forces have policies explicitly permitting LGBT personnel. Generally speaking, Western European militaries show a greater tendency toward inclusion of LGBT individuals. As of 30 October 2017, 20 countries allowed transgender military personnel to serve openly: Australia, Austria, Belgium, Bolivia, Canada, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland,Israel, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Spain, Sweden, United Kingdom,

Cuba and Thailand reportedly allowed transgender service in a limited capacity.

In 1974, the Netherlands was the first country to allow transgender military personnel.

there are no reasons for ladyboys not to remove their "tops" expose their silicon stuff. ladyboys aren't females, are they?

Those who have been through hormone treatments and in addition a operation to remove genitals are considered as women, BUT they still need lubricant - on both entrances ... :shock1:

Well, there is little in the land which cannot be solved with contributive attitude - just in case!

You're right but those senior officers need a steady supply of slaves to mow their lawns and wash their cars.

The "Magnolia" hotel at the Mabprachan lake is owned by a navy admiral or something. Apart from his black Mercedes parked in front of the hotel you always will find cadets and soldiers doing some work in the hotel.

I assume they ensure the safety of the (non-existing) guests or make sure, that there is no imminent invasion by Laotians - latter to be fought off by the three submarines presently diving up and down the Mekong.

Thai Navy Seals are foremost: navy seals. And not experienced cave divers. People who don't grasp how difficult cave diving is simply should stay out of discussions like this, but that obviously is an oxymoron.

It's not really so difficult but it does require specialised training. Making seal team is actually more difficult but they don't generally receive the training required for cave diving.

I read once that the conscripts have to give their monthly salary to the Officer they are assigned to in exchange for not being sent South or doing some real army work. I think it’s along the lines of “give me your monthly salary and you can stay here and cut my grass and clean my car and go home on weekends or if not then you will see what real army life is like”

I mean think about it...we are in Thailand...this would make complete sense in that context.

I thought the British Army only accepted LGBT recruits now.

It's all true.

Been mentioned before and people who have sons in the conscription substantiate it.

Alternatively is way down south with a gun.

The rescue of the cave boys was highly specialised and the Thais alone could not do it. My brother is ex-RN submarine officer and cave -diver top trainer, who, with his wife (also diver) has opened a cave-diving centre in Mexico. He knew one of the 3 brits who led the thing. I tried to persuade him to come over and join the lead team, but he was too far and too busy. But he did explain to me how hard it was. An Australian Navy doctor had to give all of the boys a sedative injection so as not to panic as they lay on special stretchers to be pulled through the narrow parts of the caves, submerged and in complete blackness. Very scary whether you are 14 0r 40.
