The long term health effects include cancer, emphysema, asthma, congestive heart failure, birth defects. Loss of tourist revenue is another negative effect. The fires can be put out and reduce the smog but there is a lot more going on than just the fire. Of course any reduction will let Uncle claim that he has invoked the people to act and the Gods to bless his demands and once again he has saved the day. Pollution in the air - what pollution? Filth and rubbish on the streets - what rubbish? All washed down the gutters and canals and eventually out to sea. The paddies are wet and all last minute burning has stopped. Thank god for the start of monsoon season. Shame about the pollution in the sea. Sea you later.
