In the letter to announce the suspension of Songkran celebrations on the Khao San Road, the association said this year was auspicious for Thais as the three-day coronation ceremony will be held from May 4-6 for His Majesty King Maha Vajiralongkorn. Rattanakosin in the Phra Nakhon District is a key area for coronation activities, the letter said. The area is undergoing cleaning and landscape improvements for the ceremony. The association, having hosted Songkran events for more than 40 years, decided to suspend its Songkran 2019 Festival to let the government prepare for the coronation. People can still play with water during Songkran on the Khao San, the association said. Meanwhile, Bang Rak District Office director Pakaporn Sanguansak said people can splash water at each other to celebrate Songkran on Silom Road from April 13 to 15 but there would be no organised party or vendors.
