Prime Minister Hun Sen on Tuesday reiterated support for the One-China Policy by saying that although Taiwanese people are allowed to conduct business in the Kingdom, the government will not allow a consulate. Mr Hun Sen made the statement during a dinner with the Association of Khmer-Chinese in Cambodia in Phnom Penh.

He said people from Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau must understand that Cambodia has always supported the One-China Policy since it was recognized by then Prince Norodom Sihanouk in the 1950s. “Under my leadership, I will continue to strongly support the One-China Policy,” Mr Hun Sen said. “You all have to support that.”

Okay then, there may be consequences though.

  • Cambodia-bound investment from Taiwan over the past six years totals about $568 million and most of that came in the past two years.
  • Tiawanese companies invested about $171 million in 2017 and $181 million in 2018.
  • There were 15 projects funded funded by Taiwan companies in 2018, a six-year high.
