The translation is rather too narrow.  The RID gives ดำหัว as ประเพณีทางภาคเหนือซึ่งกระทำในวันปีใหม่เพื่อเป็นการแสดงความเคารพนับถือและรักใคร่ วิธีดำหัว คือ เอาสิ่งของและน้ำที่ใส่เครื่องหอมเช่นน้ำอบไทยไปให้แก่ผู้ที่เคารพ และขอให้ท่านรดน้ำใส่หัวของตนเพื่อให้อยู่เย็นเป็นสุข

That's the whole meaning behind ดำหัว

and when you had to translate that, yes that is the story told.

But talking to people and you are talking about or want to 'Sprinkle water on older people' in conjunction with songkran/newyear day can say I go to..รดน้ำดำหัว.

 

If you want to print a leaflet, like for tourists, explaining the meaning on the ritual;

In the tradition from the northern of Thailand, that is performed on the New Years day to show respect and affection for the elders and other people of importance, the way to show is to come with a bowl of water mixed with fragnances, from roses and colorfull leafs and 'blessed water' (yellow from bottle with powder) , to pour on their hands and ask them to pour it on your head. To make you stay cool.
