Thai Rath speculated that a university student in Chonburi may have committed suicide because she was constantly teased for being overweight.

Saensuk police went to a dormitory building where the door on a third floor had to be broken down as it was locked from the inside.

By a bed was the lifeless body of 21 year old Wanaporn Phaengya originally from Samut Prakarn. She had been dead about two days and there was no sign of a struggle.

Thai Rath reported that the means of her suicide was also in the room. She had died of smoke inhalation.

She was a third year student at a well known university in Chonburi.

A friend called Suradech Jaicheun, 22, said she was last seen on Tuesday and friends became concerned when she wasn't seen and went round to her room.

He said that she was the kind of person that liked to keep herself to herself as she was very self-conscious about her weight.

Her father Woradech Phaengya, 52, arrived and said she had no problems with her family.

The police said there was no reason yet ascertained as to why she had taken her life. But many friends were saying that concerns about her weight and body shape caused her to commit suicide.

So very sad. I saw two girls die of stupid comments about being fat in the '70's.

I got taunted here about my weight, now I do the laughing.

In 1 year and 3 months I have lost more than 50kgs, just by diet alone.

Kids should not be taunted like this, very sad to read.

RIP young soul.

Unlike the West ( we’re not perfect either) but it is common in Thai culture to make fun of the obese, handicap, or someone that does not have the “movie star” appearance. -Just watch some Thai comedy on TV or in the cinema.  There is a cultural difference with Thai humor. Once I was at an outdoor show and the lip sync “singer” fell off the stage. While the Thai audience laughed, we farangs were concerned for the singer’s well-being & wasn’t hurt.

Did she kill herself because she was fat or because others told her she is fat or because she was mentally unstable?

Most people have a body which is far away from perfect. And most of us get used to it.

She should have received support for her mental health - for whatever real or imagined problem.

Yes you are exactly right. Nobody forces obese people to be gluttonous. They need to start taking responsibility for their own poor lifestyle choices.

Let me know when you write your book on good lifestyle choices and I will buy a copy and burn it. What a typical, senseless and worthless comment.

Excellent, what gave you the incentive to do something about it? Mostly women get told how beautiful they look, their weight problem is regarded and taboo and they carry on ruining their health.

Being fat has to be one of the worst things....  once i was maybe 10 kgs overweight, and it took YEARS to somehow lose it for good.  Not eating, eating a little, exercise every day, nothing seemed to work.....i forget how it came off, maybe some Vitamin B something and a mix of other exercises.  my point...i was insecure for about a year, felt bad when someone saw me and i felt fat.  i could run 20 kms but who cares, i felt fat.  it was depressing, because some days i felt strong.  but every time i saw someone skinny i felt horrible.  really a mental disorder.  i would talk about it openly, and nobody cared because i wasn't "fat".  i can only imagine if i was really fat.

look, love yourself first.  always work on your brain, get smarter.  always.  always exercise in a way you enjoy.  if you don't love yourself, you are doomed.  then you will doom others.  can't move forward if you aren't happy with you.

suicide is a common thought.  fat, no money, not smart enough, not successful enough, etc...  so HAVE A GOAL.  Then you have something to live for.  doesn't matter what the goal is.....  lose 10 kg in a year, who cares.  collect stamps, whatever.  something you enjoy and it's who you are.  walk every night, or whatever.

of course, i don't really remember what years i was insecure about my weight.  was it 10-years ago?  see....  what was such a big problem before is now forgotten.  not totally, but our mind is good at blocking these things out.

I've been told by a few 'seasoned expats' that Thais aren't a sensitive PC bunch. They don't mind being teased about being fat. They find it funny.

I knew it already, but obviously this isn't true. RIP to the young girl.
