Nothing about you paying and helping those people.. again an other person on a high horse but not actually doing anything. Its easy to have high morals and do nothing. Typical socialist always expecting someone else to foot the bill.

What a silly post. Where does it say he boy was medically unfit? The US doctor advised them to wait for the swelling to go down, that's not as statement that he was OK to fly when the swelling had gone down a bit.

They are attempting to get a free or low cost upgrade based on his need to have his leg elevated to prevent blood clots, a medical condition.

Has anyone noticed this story only shows up on thedailycaller, and the only info we get is from the uncle, who appears to be sitting on his butt back in Washington state?

(And can't spell SHANGHAI?)

Nothing from the family who is with the kid.

Something stinks.    I wonder what the nature of the motorcycle accident was?

The chances are they were on a rented bike, Dad screwed up and it ended up with the kid having a broken leg.

But we'll never know for sure

My niece just flew to BKK on Delta. Delta from the States to Seoul, Korean Air from Seoul to BKK. All booked as a Delta flight with Delta on all the documents.

It’s called code sharing . Delta and Korean Air are both in the Skyteam alliance. No US airline flies to Thailand.

You sure about that?  I recall they stopped flying to BKK back mid to late 90's

2008 Northwest Airlines that use to fly to BKK merged with Delta Airlines. A few years ago Delta quit flying into BKK but when you book a flight with Delta from BKK you’ll be flying to one of their “hubs “ such as in Japan. So...Nippon Airlines to Japan or Korean Air to Incheon. It can be confusing checking in at the airport if you are not aware you are not flying Delta from BKK.

I agree, Maybe it was another airline. I just recall that my typical flight schedule ended up changing.

I have to say nowadays it's allot easier and quicker to get to Thailand from the East cost of the US than it was 20+ years ago. Can't wait until we can make the trip in a few hours!!

Just think of the rant in the OP had the kid required a dedicated air ambulance and they got charged the typical $50,000- $100,000. This is for a Large Business Jet that only needs one fuel stop.

That's when travel insurance is really handy.

A one off private charter from Bangkok to Los Angeles is more than $150,000. Don’t ask me why I know. Quoted for a large

Business jet that only needs one fuel stop.

Sure an air ambulance flight ( nurses and other costs) would be more. How much?

I fly first class and have NEVER seen it at full capacity EVER. This is Delta gouging folks and I hope it backfires on them.

While true on Thai and many of the other nationally subsidized carriers, you've obviously not flown Delta (or previously NWA) in a LONG time. They both actually eliminated 1st Class on international flights over 15 years ago, but they do have a comparable, less pricey, Business Elite Class and it is nearly always full. They eliminated 1st Class long ago, opting for the more popular and profitable Business Class, for the very reason you mentioned. They fill that Business cabin to capacity on a vast majority of their flights.

In the past decade, Delta...with more than 5000 flights/day worldwide...has an average load factor of over 85%. #1 in US carriers and #15 worldwide...including the low cost carriers. Delta fills their planes.

Highly likely, to avoid the bad rap, Delta management will do some recovery and make better on this issue.

It's called code-sharing. Quite common in the past decade...longer with certain carriers, such as Northwest/KLM which started 25 years ago...now Delta/KLM/Air France.

Why do people with children feel so entitled and always expect special treatment just because they have a brat in tow. It's YOUR kid, not Delta's. Accidents happen...especially with kids...step up, take responsibility and be real parents and stop playing the blame game. :post-4641-1156693976:

Totallly agree with you. Pregnant women in America are also horrible smug and self indulgent expecting everybody to fawn over them. I’m not a child psychology expert but business class should be child free, and none of these goddamn fake service animals. (No kids under 7-8 years of age) so there is no crying and screaming.

Why didn't their insurance pay?

So they want others to pay for the care of their son. And even worse, they have so much lack of a conscience they seek publicity in order for the others to pay for them.

Incredible entitlement.

Pretty lame on the parents in my opinion.  It sounds like there were several ways to address this.  Obviously buy a first class ticket, or even business class or two coach seats and sit sideways for much of the flight.  And as is often the case, the people that don't prepare for problems lash out at others for not helping them.  No travel or accident insurance?   Waiting for the go fund me page whine next.  "The family did eventually make it home in economy, with the boy finding a row of free seats in economy.".  uh huh.  So they tried to get a deal that they didn't really need.  Bunch of bums

Tourist scum.

Send them back so they can be arrested and deported for not having proper insurance that coveres First Class plane tickets or emergency airlift.

On a serious note, good to hear the little fella made it home ok. I’m sure the Somchai who hit him feels terrible about it.

I wish the earth was flat, so you could drop off the edge... tourist "scum," no, you are the scum.

I've seen First Class on domestic flights full more often than not. for international flights one should choose business class, which offers lie-flat seats as comfortable as a bed. There's little difference between Business and First in terms of comfort.

Never had it, never will -after many hundreds of flights I have saved a huge amount of money ????

Huge? Travel insurance is quite affordable. And hospital and repatriation costs can bankrupt you..

A global  medical travel insurance could have saved the family a lot of worry. And you can get one with evacuation transport included for less than 30 euro a year per person. Even if it would cost 50 euros a year, it would take 40 years to not make the insurance worthwhile (€2000 ticket / €50 = 40). Taking a gamble that nothing will happen,  no injuries, no lost items, nothing stolen year after year after year seems like quite the gamble to me!

I don't think GoFundMe would exactly be the best solution for those who seem wealthy enough to fly halfway across the globe but who dont spent a few extra coins on basic preparation such as insurance. Unless I missed something and they had to deal with some silly reasoning why no company would wish to insure them at a fair and affordable rate.

Can't really say I blame Delta. 2-3 chairs in economy seem to have worked too for those who opt to travel cheap and ill prepared. Sure it would have been nice if Delta or the company that the plane belonged to had given an upgrade but it could not have been expected.

Still, I feel sad for the poor kid for having had this accident,  hassle and all. Esp. if much of it could have been avoided if the parents planned ahead a bit more.

My bad here, seems when people refer to travel insurance they mean medical insurance - I'm old...........

Travel insurance used to be if the plane crashed or you lost your bags - least I thought it did!

I have always had, due mainly to my job, medical insurance that covers evacuation etc etc...........

Remember most people posting here are not Americans, who are likely like me to hold medical insurance. Have emergency medical costs here on Holiday in Thailand I have to pay out of pocket and apply for reimbursement later except for a very few Hospitals , but Aetna or whoever are going not to pay for an upgrade to Business class to hold your kids leg elevated! They would expect you to delay travel until Medically able.

The NHS of the UK for example is not an insurance company. Residents are provided treatment in the UK only or maybe EU is some cases. So when a young lad here “on Holiday” gets in a major accident (with no fancy private cover) he is on the hook for all costs and could be totally screwed!

Thus the need to apply for “travel insurance”, to cover medical costs one might incur while on Foreign vacation prior to departure. The plans are

Very reasonable. Eventually it will be mandatory here here as it is in many countries as more and more hospitals complain about foriegn tourists skipping out on the bill!

Of course they wont pay for that. Insurance companies have entire departments which fight against you to find ways to deny you. It is the most glaring paradox in modern day society as far as i am concerned, paying a company who you are funding to work against you. It is a giant scam. Unfortunately it got ingrained in our dna the need to feel safe and secure so these leeches prosper. Medical care for all citizens in a country is X. Medical care for all citizens in a country with health insurance is X plus insurance overhead plus insurance profits. So nice to pay for an insurance ceo's yacht when i need to go to the hospital.

So yes, you are right, of course they will not cover it.

How many times do I have to remind people Delta does not fly to Thailand but their flight attendants were very attractive back in the 1970s they just never retired and got old!
