Sanook: Taking a rest from the heat!

Embattled former immigration chief Lt-Gen Surachate Hakparn has gone to America.

Sanook reported that government spokeswoman Patcharaporn Inthiang revealed that the former poster boy of the Royal Thai Police had put in a request for a holiday.

He is expected to be back at the end of this month.

Surachate - known throughout the Thai and English language press as Big Joke - was feeling the heat after his abrupt transfer from chief of immigration to a civil service role as special adviser in the PM's office, said Sanook.

Naewna said in their headline reporting the same story that the LT-Gen was avoiding the "storm in his life".

Sanook said that exactly what he will do in the PM's office on his return remains to be seen.

Isn't that what we see as a typical reaction here: When the going gets tough, run away? Although it is more common at the scene of an accident.

I wonder if that could be 'if he returns'?

Rumour has it that he is going to attempt to void the March 24 election, from a safe haven, on the bases of not being a free and fair election.

Then he's going to announce a bid for himself in a new election, but his bid will be in absentia.

Just kidding of course.

Before he enters the U.S. make sure he opens an account and deposit $24,000.   He can not touch it for 3 months then he can withdraw no more than half of it.

Do not worry, he is worth 1000 fold of $24000. You do not jump 5-6 ranks in 2 years without giving out loads of candy on the way up

He should be refused entry for not having a means of supporting himself while in the USA.

Well, my Thai friend was not approved for a visa to US when he wanted to go and visit his sister (naturalized US citizen), the US embassy sited not enough money and the likelihood of my friend going to US to work as the reason... My friend only had 1million Bath in the bank and his family have 3 businesses, including the largest pig farm in the district, employing about 30 people. So with those strict rules for Thais going to other countries, then I can really understand if the Thai immigration don't allow you in if you can't show that you have 20k Baht for your stay.

Please help me!  I have a Thai friend, who has many reasons to return to Thailand, denied a US tourist visa last year!  That travel would have been for less than 3 weeks and time would have been touring with a married, same sex, Thai national living in Arizona.  Why should a US visa be so easy for "Big Joke" to obtain!  What should my friend do differently should they decide to reapply in the future?  I very sincerely desire your comments!!!

I certainly hope that the U.S. Immigration officer makes sure he has cash in his pocket AND a return ticket before admitting him...

Obviously he will. He is not a peasant !
