Several stories and videos in the Thai media and on social media showed a number of foreigners helping the Thais clear up the mess after Songkran.

Thai Rath reported that two French people in Sukhothai willingly chipped in to help.

Earlier a Thai Facebook poster had blamed his compatriots for leaving the mess for foreigners to tidy up.

Jessica Ybert and Mathieu Savigne said they were happy to help. They were here to do voluntary work anyway.

They said they loved the Thai culture and traditions and this was one way to give back - besides it was fun!

The owner of the hostel where they were staying in Sukhothai - Pariwat Wichianchot - was one of two Thais who helped the French people in the clear up after a Songkran event near the clock tower in the historical northern Thai city.

Meanwhile a Thai man posted a video of a foreign man and his children cleaning up trash on the banks of the Mae Ping River. They had brought a large plastic sack to help with their efforts.

He called them "jai dee" (kind) for helping though failed to elicit much response regarding their nationality.
