Thailand’s Immigration Bureau has a new commander.

Pol Maj Gen Sompong Chingduang will now head up the Bureau, replacing outgoing immigraiton chief Surachate Harkparn, also known as Big Joke, who in a surprise move earlier this month was stripped of police duties and transferred to a role within the civil service.

Pol Maj Gen Sompong Chingduang, known as ‘Big Oud’ in the Thai media, was once dubbed “the crime buster of Bangkok”, following his work as a former deputy commissioner at the Metropolitan Police Bureau.

In October 2018, he was appointed chief of the Border Patrol Police, and as a result was promoted to police lieutenant general.

He had also worked at the Crime Suppression Division in southern Thailand and been a district police chief in Narathiwat.

He transfers from the Border Patrol Police to the Immigration Bureau.

Meanwhile, Spring News reported that deputy prime minister Prawit said that no investigation or further information will be released regarding the shock removal of Surachate Harkparn from the Immigration Bureau.

Earlier this week it was reported that Surachate Harkparn is currently on vacation in the United States.

It is not known why Surachate Harkparn was removed as Immigration chief.

Head of Immigration in Thailand is starting to look like the poisoned chalice job considering that Thailand wants its cake and eat it on this front ... rather like the football manager of England position, expectations vs reality.

Looking at the photo, his subordinates dont look very happy.

Hopefully we will be spared all the vinyl posters his predecessor loved.:cheesy:

You kinda have to wonder, why they never seem to promote from within Immigration, which like any Thai govt agency is rife with deputy commanders of all sorts....

They seem to have a habit of sending someone in from outside... in this case.... like BJ, someone who apparently has absolutely no prior working experience within the Immigration Bureau.

Errr! What is normal about the Thai Immigration policies? Hoops - Revolving doors - Goal posts moving etc. We haven't seen a status quo (normal service) for years!

This is by design within the RTP. There are essentially two "classes" within the RTP: the normal police, and those who were groomed in the elite academy. Those who are not anointed will never rise to these positions.
