pantip plaza is it dead?

Been like that since the coup. Started going downhill within a few months and has never recovered.

The computer shops seem to be the hardest hit.

On the other hand the amulet business is actually expanding and now has places on the second floor.

Food court is still good and the weekend flea market on top is always interesting. Often see the occasional foreigner selling stuff there.

i went to pantip plaza the other day to fix a computer. omg. its almost totally empty?  where did the shops go?

Which one you went?

Pratunam or Ngamwongwan.

Pratunam had a renovation craze, and after that many shops did not return. The rent was too high and the ambiance was gone.

On the Ngamwongwan it is still the same as before, it was not great compared with the Pratunam one and still is.

But at least, they did not change. The same shops still here, mostly for printers, ink and cables it is fine.

Pratunam was better, as it has more gadget, 2nd hand computer parts, games, and so on.. but now.. phone phone phone and cables cables.

They had a concurrence too at the Palladium IT, opposite the junction.

And that mall now is dead more then Pantip self. Only 5% of the shops is open, the rest is nada zero.

(I am talking about the IT floors, not about the floors below.)

Palladium has the idea it would run great and had even a sixth floor ready for shops next to the 4th and 5th, but that floor never opened.

It is all faling, online and interrest and rent.

I stick with Zeer Rangsit, it is renovating too but it seems that the stores not dying, only some changing old goes new come.

Pantip on the Ngamwongwan, in the weekend a great fleamarket in the parkinglot on the top floor.

I fully agree with Denim.

The only reason for me to go there, about two times a year.

Rgds

it died together with their 'sexy dvds'

That's one reason I quit going to Pantip- the aggressive porn hawkers.  I have nothing against porn itself.  I just don't like it when anyone gets right up in my face to try to sell me something I didn't set out for.

There are countless businesses that have declined since the hapless army took over. The list in endless. The impact they have had on the economy with their failed policies, endless restrictions and rules and regulations, and enforcement of proclamations that make no sense, benefit nobody, and are simply a reflection of a Quaker type aspiration, have devastated the nation. Get out! Get out now! Nobody likes you. Nobody wants you. Leave please.

What a stupid comment connecting the decline of pantip with the coup and army. Anyone with an ounce of brainpower knows its the online shops that are destroying brick and mortar shops not to mention the increased rents after the remodelling.

Sorry just had to be said.

My you do go on and on. I have a great idea, why dont you leave Thailand instead of constantly screeching about the junta. You might feel better psychologically.

The army??

What do they have to do with lousy product s/venue and poor business models.

There are also many other businesses doing very well.

Tukcom in Pattaya is similar and is always packed in fact much more packed then before the army took over.

Sometimes a good look in the mirror can provide all the honest answers.

I don't have a problem with people complaining about the junta, but in this case its totally unrelated.

Pantip in Chiang mai has been undergoing renovations in the last couple of years. Was in there last week and u able to get what I wanted. They still have computer repair shops printer shops it city etc ..but fewer shops open. Good educational place now and outlets. BUT it soon occurred to me that there are fewer desktop computers being built unless gaming and laptops which do seem more reliable BUT predominantly a big move to phones. Even tablets seem dead as a trend. We seem to have bigger screens and enough power on the handphone to do most if what we need for average computing. So yes online but more on smartphone... Changing world.

Nothing to do with the coup, they had a very prolonged renovation where they would close down half of one floor, a bit of another, shift all the stalls around. End result was that you never knew where anything was. This went on for about 18 months at least, many of the escalators were out of action for months. All this meant that customers came, were disappointed and never came back.

Less customers plus higher rents meant many shops did not come back after the renovations finally finished, which means even less customers ....it’s a vicious circle.

On the positive side at least the new food court is safer to eat at, pity they tucked it away where nobody knows about it !

The pirate software and “sexy dvd” guys have been banished, whether that is good or bad is “up to you”.

Actually , my post was referring to Panthip 2 on Ngam Wong Wahn road. I should have made that clear. My bad.

I always preferred Panthip 2 to the Prathoo Nam one as it has a wider variety of goods on sale plus a better food court. ( never had any porn Cd's either )

The computer floor went into decline after the coup not because of it ( I used the reference as a time benchmark )

Prior to that there was a thriving computer repair floor with scores of small shops offering that service.

They likely all went bust when many young people replaced their broken desktop computers for a smartphone which a lot of people find is good enough for social networking etc especially with the larger screens you are now seeing. Just my guess. The phone market on the second floor is still thriving as is the amulet business.

It's way more peaceful and civilised now. I think it's great. You should def go a see. One can actually walk there now.

It's kind of a shame that they can't get Pantip Plaza to be more successful.  The location is pretty ideal with tourists galore.  They even have that underground parking.  I'll admit that I haven't been there in ages.  I still remember when they had a Fuji restaurant in there.  And a Mexican place.  Awhile back I'd heard there was a Big C (mini?) in there.  Anyways, hopefully someone can resurrect that place.

Crap, just notice that this is the Bangkok forum, so probably not the same Pantip Plaza I'm thinking of in Chiang Mai.  Apologies.

People don't need to buy poor quality, virus infected dvds now that fast internet allows just about anything to be downloaded. So I'm told.

Depends what you are looking for.   I was there about a week ago and plenty of things if you are into high end gaming.   I prefer Fortune but even that has a pretty limited choice when compared to online.

I rather fancy the new 17" LG Gram laptop but haven't seen one anywhere in Bangkok (reports are that they will be 60,000 THB so I want to have a play before I pay for one).   Also in the market for a couple of portable monitors to go with it so I can have 2 or 3 screens when I'm travelling.
