MickGC
Pantip Plaza was like a trip to heaven for us computer nerds 20 years ago. Was there before the internet took the world by storm and you could purchase just about any software or hardware that was available at that time. Could also have a great feed and beers in the food court.

CP (owner of 7/11) benefited enormously because the foodstalls were closed and small businesses went bankrupt. Casino (owner of BigC) benefited for the same reason, as did Tesco. Toyota, Westinghouse, Sony etc - the formal sector of the economy benefited from the crack-down on the informal sector. A multinational corporation has no use for illiterate Burmese, they want Thai workers, but many Thais rather operated some informal small business, food stall, sell copies of Windows, of porn or of Viagra, sell sex, whatever. Now they have a 9-5 job. They mostly accept it because almost all Thais benefited from the transmission of loose monetary policy of rich countries' central banks. Do you remember the times when it was unheard of that Thais would go for a holiday trip to Japan? That was not long ago. True, the country pretty much resembles military barracks now... LazySlipper
I used to go tp Pantip every weekend when I first got here. IMHO the only reason Pantip ... and all computer stores are suffering is because of the rise of the TABLET AND SMART PHONE. Sales for PC's have dropped world wide according to a report I saw on RT Today a while ago. Who knows, maybe PC's will go the way of the dinosaurs. Now I hope the same happens to the neo democrat PC's ????
Pib
Here is what happening to many computer/IT stores in malls - Online stores cutting into sales of mall stores - Computers/electronics harder to repair since fewer individual components are replaceable....not uncommon to need to replace the whole motherboard which means it probably better to buy a new device - Desktop sales and components decreasing as people switch to laptops/tablets/smartphones - Mall renovates....raises rents....stores leave/go out of business...or switch to being online stores...so, so many online stores now days are people selling out of their condos

Thanks When you wake up you walk out the soi and then you see the Terminal 21 in front of you, turn right and scratch you butt and be ready for a walk over Asoke road and be sure stop at 7eleven for a refreshment and not long after you pass three intersections on the left hand you have FortuneTown. Or take the subway to Phraram9, stops at FortuneTown.
toast1
It is the same in CM and all over the world, IT stores are closing down as everything moves online. Yes, who in Asia has a PC these days, or even a laptop. I used to really enjoy the old restaurant, the new one is not so nice, I liked the old scruffy feel. Perhaps they could have just lowered the rents and kept it as it was. I will miss Pantip, when it eventually folds, have enjoyed spending time there, got some great deals and found the repair guys to be honest and efficient. Why has Chromebook not taken off in Asia - its a mystery. They are slimmer, cheaper, quicker and more reliable.

One can actually walk there now. Is the A&W stand still there? The last bastion of the root beer float. Couldn't go to Pantip without stopping by for one.
