I believe both CMU and the 700 Anniversary Stadium have pools that you can use once you apply for a membership card..

How much is the membership fee per year?

And MaeJo University.

You only need the membership card for CMU (something like 250bht/year) plus 50bht/swim, 700 year and MaeJo you can pay per swim (around 50bht). They're nearly always empty, I suspect because theres little or no cover, and the Thais don't want a tan..

Seems strange that you need it to be subsidized by the government.

As sfokevin says, the 700 Anniversary Stadium pool is open to the public. I have used it a few times, it is okay, sometimes a bit cold due to the depth of the water, I would not go there unless I happened to be in the area. If you are trying to save money, I would guess that you'll end up wasting more time and gas getting to these places than you actually save.

There are some excellent privately-owned pools that are open to the public for a low fee. For example, there is a big pool in pleasant surroundings on the roof of the Lotus Hotel Pang Suan Kaew, accessible via the hotel or the Kad Suan Kaew mall. You just have to time it for when there are not so many Chinese there, they sometimes cause chaos by swimming in the wrong direction. Best way to avoid them is to go early.

Some private pools are expensive like 200 baht per swim. 50 baht is considered subsidised.

How much are they charging for the Lotus Hotel pool?

It cost around 100 baht per swim last year, I have not been in a while, might be more now. I think there is a 50 baht discount if you have a membership card for the Harris Fitness Center below it.

So far, I have never come across a pool that charges 200 baht.

Honestly, though, you would be better off settling on a nice, well-maintained pool that happens to be close to where you live. An extra hundred baht is less that three dollars, nothing, your limited time on Earth is more valuable than that.

Don't know if this is still true but at least in Bangkok you had to get a health certificate to get a public pool membership card.  I had to do this for both Ekkamai and Benjasri Park pools

I was never asked for this at the 700 Anniversary Stadium pool. It is not particularly clean, definitely wear foot protectors to avoid verrucas.

I would also avoid using any public pool (government or privately-owned) at a time when there is a diarrhoea bug going around - the Thais are not aware that you should not use pools when you are sick.

I think the "membership" at the 700 Anniversary Stadium pool was essentially just an extra 20 or 40 baht the first time you use the pool, it is an administrative thing.

I find it odd that public swimming pool is not popular here.

The vast majority of Thais cannot swim, even those living on the coasts.

This is *wonderful* if you happen to live in a gated community, because they usually have a beautiful pool and small fitness center that was built to attract house buyers. The Thai make a big deal over the fact that their new community has a pool, it is a symbol of success, but then they almost never use it. In a community like mine, which is almost entirely middle class Thai, the pool is almost always empty, swimming alone is bliss ????

Occasionally, I might see one of the community's handful of other Westerners, but the Thais only show up in the very hot weather, when they stand in the water splashing each other and shouting.

I do live in a gate community but the pool is too small and too shallow. It's more suitable for kids swimming.  Furthermore, it's next to the admin office where everyone can you see half-naked. lol

I need an olympic size pool or something close.

Id be checking the chemical levels

Overdosing of chlorine has been to occur with some nasty results.

It's not subsidised, but Samakee Chiang Mai Commercial Association on Thung Hotel Road has a large, pleasant swimming pool which has been renovated in the last year or so. Last time I was there the fee was 60 baht a visit.

For anyone who is interested it is also one of, I think, only 3 places in Chiang Mai that has a squash court.

The one at CMU is quite dirty I found. Also the main pool is split into 2 parts by a rope and buoys. There is a life guard there also.

You must be a member, I think it was about 500 baht, then 50 baht each time.

700 year stadium is much better IMO. No life guards, or trees shedding leaves, very clean. It's next to the gym.

As above you must have proper lycra swimming trunks. It's 60 baht without any need for membership.

Once though a professional team turned up with a coach. They dived over the top of me and took over the pool. I had to get out.

How bloody rude!

That is the major problem with swimming in Asia: no pool etiquette, no lane discipline etc.

The problem with that pool is that there is always so many people there that you can not swim; just stand around in the crowded pool. We used to go there about 10 years ago and it was pleasant, but then everyone started bringing their kids and  and it is way too crowded.

I enjoy swimming at the Centre of the Universe pool.  Clean, large (not Olympic-sized I think-but big), and it’s salt water.

Excepting early mornings and after work, it’s pretty empty.  A bit busier on weekends.

It’s not cheap-200 a swim-but buying a multi-pass brings it down to 100 baht a swim.

There’s a restaurant, dressing rooms and showers, sun chairs, umbrellas and tables poolside.

There’s also a special rate for lap-swimmers who don’t stay all day, but I don’t know how that’s priced.  But it’s all on their website.

Up until late 2018, wife occasionally used the pool at the Girl Guide (Girl Scouts) Association of Thailand, Chiang Mai branch.

There may be a modest fee, and perhaps gender discrimination.

Entrance at GPS: 18.776912,99.000801, on an un-named soi off ChangKlan Road.

Chiang mai land , swimming pool and small pool for kids , has a restaurant there as well , 60 Baht a swim

I've swum there once when the condo pool was closed. it's OK.

The Ratilanna Hotel down at the end of Changkhlan Road I believe has a monthly membership of 1000 baht to use the gym and pool.

I just drove in, paid for myself and friends and had our swims.   No membership needed.

My Thai friends said it was too strange, as it was mid-week and hardly a person there.  They thought something must be wrong for people to stay away!

I believe Centre of the Universe pool is available for visitors, as a reasonable price and very pleasant meals can be had there.
