PHUKET: The Phuket Governor has launched a public-relations offensive on the action taken to resolve the water-shortage situation, which only yesterday morning he was at pains to announce was still not a “drought crisis”.

According to repeated reports published by the Phuket office of the Public Relations Department, Governor Phakaphong Tavipatana again ordered local municipalities to make sure residents in their respective areas are supplied water for household use.

At the meeting held at Provincial Hall yesterday afternoon (Apr 23), Rassada Municipality was specifically ordered to look after residents in its area.

Once again an example of how impotent and irrelevant the office of Governor is.

The duties are mainly ceremonial, involving holding meetings and press conferences to spout empty words while having little power nor ability to actually make a difference to the big issues.  A figure head position designed to give favored public servants a prosperous retirement.

All big decisions that can affect the Province are made in Bangkok and Phuket is not a favored son there. No fast trains linking this province to the capital (or China!).  Infrastructure here is always an afterthought, essentials such as adequate roads and water supplies for the massive increases in building projects and tourist arrivals is always too little too late.

I really have trouble understanding why there are water shortages here. The Island does has a high annual rainfall which should be adequate if cleverly utilized, and there is also a massive dam covering 185 sq. kms, with storage capacity of around 5600 million cubic meters less than 100kms to the north. Not a major engineering feat to pipe water from there.

Sounds like they are late to the table in enacting water conservation policies.Better start now because it is only going to get worse in years to come.

No need as there is no water crisis and if there was then the local municipalities are fixing it now.

Already clearly stated on multiple occasions, there is no water shortage in Phuket so pushing for solutions to a water shortage problem that doesn't exist is a complete waste of time. Move along, nothing to see here.
