webfact
VIDEO: Chinese tourist caught stealing camera from Spanish couple in Chiang Mai CCTV captures the moment a Chinese man takes a camera from a Spanish couple in Chiang Mai on Tuesday. The Spanish tourists had been visiting Wat Phra That Doi Suthep when they left a GoPro camera on the bench they had been sitting on. After realising their mistake they returned a short time later but the camera was missing. They reported the missing camera to police who checked CCTV footage which revealed the camera had been taken by a man wearing an unmistakably large hat. The man had been sitting behind the Spanish couple and helped himself to the camera after he saw it had been left on the bench. The CCTV footage showed the man going to sit where the camera had been left before using his large hat and shirt to try and hide the fact he had taken the camera. The man was discovered to be a part of a group of Chinese tourists who police later tracked down to the Old Chiang Mai Cultural Centre. When approached by police the Chinese man handed over the camera telling officers that he had intended to hand it in but wasn’t sure how or where to report the matter. Channel 7 reported that the incident seemed to have been put down to a misunderstanding, with the camera eventually being returned to the Spanish couple. According to reports in Thai media, it doesn’t appear the Chinese man was charged with theft. anchadian
Didn't a British man recently find a mobile intending to find its owner, and got about 10 days in detention for doing so.
KeesHolland
It is very clear that the noble Chinese quality tourist is looking around in an attempt to find the Spanish couple to return the camera he found and wrapped in clothes to protect it. I bet we will see this guy soon pictured while accepting flowers from TTP
sweatalot
So he wanted to return it to return it. Why then did he hide it under the hat after picking up?
KeesHolland
It is very clear that he is not hiding it, he just gives it extra protection in order not to damage before returning the camera to the owner

RotBenz8888
In a usual case, the thieves would be sitting with bowed heads by a desk at the police station with 10 officers standing behind smiling, and the robbed pointing at the them. Buuuut since they are Chinese.....

Naamblar2014
All just a misunderstanding... ???? The best lawyer would be hard pressed to make a case that this man simply came across the item and innocently picked it up. This man knew that what he was doing was wrong. It made me sick how he tries to conceal what he was doing. He should be charged with theft. Absolute scumbag. But up-to Thailand, if you want scumbag thieves who sh@t and pi@s on your beaches and footpaths, then good luck to you.

chrisinth
Well, there was little misunderstanding from the Chinese gentleman from the moment he saw the go-pro to the minute he had it concealed under his shirt obscuring the theft (Yup!) with his hat. I can only imagine the only reason he wasn't arrested was either the Spanish couple didn't want to press charges or that they weren't privy to the CCTV footage and didn't get the full picture. There are times I wish the laws of the person's nationality were used against them; this is one of those times for me.

Brit guy gets 10 days in jail, huge fine and his head shaved then told to leave the country. Chinese guy gets released, and probably thanked for returning the 'lost' item. Just about says all there is to say about Thailand and white folk, they hate us and want us to leave.
